The characters were layered, but I'm not sure if the first movie adaptation of Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie (1950) was. It was like there was so much going on with the characters, but so little in form of progression with the story. Not a total standstill, but it didn't feel 100% satisfactory as they did Hollywood up the ending. But there are qualities here.
