It's hard to completely hate this when the handheld memory footage is so affecting, and when Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep are giving their best efforts. And Lowry's original, allegorical tale touches on something elemental and powerful that's hard to entirely destroy. But boy, do they try. Everything is smothered by dystopian cliches, sprinkled with a mandatory romantic subplot, and beaten nearly to death with a hammer of melodrama. The climactic speech made me want to be released to elsewhere.

Man, I love this book. There's enough of the great idea from the book to make this enjoyable, but only just. The cinematography needed to be excellent, but was just passable. The direction was so unimaginative throughout, it just seemed like a remake of other dystopian tropes.

Pretty good, albeit shallow, interpretation of the novel. The acting and cinematography were good. The dialogue was stilted and weird for a reason, but it does hurt the film's watchability a bit. I don't know. It's fine but I'll never watch it again.

This was quite enjoyable! I wasn't really hyped for it, I've never read the book, but I was insanely happy with Jeff Bridges. It's not like I didn't know how great he is, but... damn. He just KILLS it as the titular character. I loved the ambient gimmicks in this movie, it's got a great atmosphere. The only thing holding it back from going even higher was a somewhat-wonky third act (including one scene where I literally called bullshit). Dystopia's being done to death but this one is worth it.

I haven't read the book. The Giver, like the Hunger Games and Divergent, presents yet another teen dystopia; however unlike its predecessors, it is conceptually richer and sets itself up to deal with subtler themes. Unfortunately, the direction this film takes in its final act feel forced, implausible and uninspired. With solid performances from Bridges and Streep, the Giver misses an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, which seems like a real shame.

In many respects a marvelous movie, but with a pathetic excuse for an ending? There was a lot to like. Performances were good, even Jeff Bridges was enjoyable. Music and effects were great. Despite the foolishness such as heavy handed story telling, a dystopian society and a general lack of emotions it was nevertheless interesting and engaging. Until of course the ridiculous finale. If you walk out 5 minutes before the end, you will like it more!

Colour-blindness means no racial conflict, so Oz must become black'n'white Kansas. Though at one point a bunch of 'inspiring' still shots ends with a photo of Nelson Mandela. Authoritarian liberals homogenize humanity into conformity to avoid war and such, but, you know those liberals, they still kill with (barely-metaphors for) abortion. Bizarrely DIVERGENT-ish, another sermon on conformity by people who seem like they are scared - ie. too conformist - to show any actual non-conformity. Dumb.

This YA-adaptation tries to cater to the high-school audiences waiting for the next Hunger Games and Divergent sequels. Instead, it spits on the actual coming-of-age morals displayed in the source material.

Its scope seems insignificant, its message already covered, its ideas banal. There is nothing in The Giver that someone else hasn't already done, and likely done better. The Giver wants to be something different, and in a lot of ways it is. But eventually it becomes what it ultimately is: another voice in a sea of voices shouting against conformity. Ironic, isn't it?

I liked it. I read the book but can't really remember it, so while some of it is a little cheesy (like the piano scene) and I felt the last act or so felt a little flat, I enjoyed watching the main character learn how to feel. It was pretty emotional and decently realized. Jeff Bridges was awesome.

The Giver was such a simple, straightforward book (basically being Junior's First Dystopian Story) that it's hard to imagine they could go so astray with this movie. Not only does it SCREAM "Teen Fiction" but they somehow managed to add a motorcycle chase into it when they realized it wasn't schlocky enough.

Being a really, really big fan of the book, I have to complain. It follows the same story and the acting is good (especially Bridges) and I loved how this film was envisioned and done, but they added so much more and left so much out, that it almost completely lacks the spirit of the novel. The orderof events is a little off too. It could have been much, much better (perhaps as a mini series).

There's no foul language in it. No sex scenes. No gratuitous drug abuse. Hints of youthful attraction and snippets of violence are both restrained in their depictions and used fully in the service of the larger story and moral lesson. The Giver is a challenging film, to be sure. It deals with life, liberty, free will . But it never once wavers in its responsibility to escort moviegoers onto solid moral ground, to give them loads of positive material to think about and talk through afterwards.

The dystopian cliches are a tad too high in number for The Giver to prove a winner, but it's an alright watch if you're not burned out on the genre already. Jeff Bridges' performance is solid stuff.

I was pretty tipsy when I watched this, but I thought it was decent. It was cool that it had Bridges and Streep in it. I really liked the book when I was younger, even though the ending made no sense (and still doesn't). They translated the source material well and that's honestly more than I expected.

filmically speaking, this was pretty bad. everything from its visual aesthetic, to the story/world it set up to the many misguided performances and cheesy lines. i definitely rolled my eyes a lot while watching this film and i found myself questioning plotholes and logical flaws throughout, which in turn prevented me from suspending my disbelief. i love the concept and the book behind the film so much though, that even still the experience wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Unwatchably ponderous and woebegone. Plus, babies get killed via lethal injection and stuffed down trash chutes. I didn't give a shit about any of these sad-sack ciphers, and the whole "it's a black and white world but I can see in color" thing is just foolish. Don't come near this frigging wretched movie unless you're a hardcore fan of the book. I found it torturous.

The Giver probably could have been a good film. I don't think it's "unfilmable." We got Cloud Atlas, which was supposed to unfilmable, and it was amazing. What we have here is a derivative young adult adaptation that preaches originality but contains very little itself. This isn't a fun, inspiring, or even thought-provoking movie. It's just more of the same blandness that can more often than not be expected from this sort of thing.

"The Giver" movie captures the essence of the book with its striking visuals and Jeff Bridges delivering a standout performance. While it maintains the story's core, it falls short in delivering the emotional depth that made the book a masterpiece. Some deviations from the source material and the early introduction of Jonas' ability to see colors slightly diminish the impact of his journey. Nevertheless, it's a visually unique adaptation worth watching, especially if you're a fan of the book.

There's a good movie in here trying to escape very, very poor editing. The memories were poorly presented and are maybe the biggest problem with this project, as they fail to deliver the emotional punch that this movie so desperately needs. It certainly doesn't work on a nuts-and-bolts logical level.

It has been 5 years since I read the book, but the deviations are obvious. I liked that some blanks were filled in, like other perspectives, but I did not like the choices/execution. The memories transmitted to Jonas were beautiful and powerful. As an elephant lover, I was especially triggered by the elephant poaching memory. I do remember having more fondness for the book, but this is a movie I want to share with my future children, especially before they can, or if they don't want to, read it.

It's a sad day when a beloved YA classic is adapted with A-list actors and tanks compared to it's intellectually junior competition. The story here makes more sense than "Hunger Games" and "Twilight" movies, it's like someone actually thought about it before scribbling on paper and vomiting out a teen chick heroine with nothing other than some intangible special-ness that we're told exists, but can't see. Even if "The Giver" is better than every one of those, it still is just not that good.

It doesn't take an elder to tell you that the story this movie is based off of is really good. I don't think the book translates to a movie as well. I was happy with Jeff Bridges and extremely happy with Odeya Rush. She is a new actress to me and I thought she did a great job and was quite beautiful. Meryl Streep was a pretty big name to have in this but she faded into the background and I'll probably forget that she was even in this, I feel the same way about Katie Holmes...

Based on an award-winning 1993 novel, this movie was disappointing in comparison with the many other young adult dystopian novels-turned-movies that have come out since then. The characters just weren't believable, especially with Jeff Bridges as the title character, and the scenes in which Jonas learned about all the good and terrible things about the world pales in comparison to a similar scene in "The Fifth Element." Compare this also to Divergent"; the emotions were believable and relatable.

I guess my rating's a little bit lower than it should be, but I'm angry with this movie. Because it starts out well. It portrays a world in nice, glossy, white Apple design. Yet, there's something unsettling and we discover more and more fascist characteristics until we find out how cruel this peacefulness is. And then Hollywood goes and destroys all critique with some happy peppy bullcrap ending. Grrrrrrrrr!

The story-telling through colour-grading is serviceable and Jeff Bridges and Taylor-Swift adds a little character to what is otherwise poor YA sci-fi movie. Shame really, as it might have had the potential as an updated Logans Run. Also, the ending makes no god-damn sense! Bland.
