it starts interesting, setting up a seemingly delicate web you could easily mistake for some sort of meta-level character study with a big personal revelation at the end of the tunnel. emily blunt clearly works her ass off here, but she can't save the script from steadily degrading into rudimentary thriller schlock. a more fitting title would be "gone girl, interrupted on the train to nowhere".

This is a decent film, but it is difficult to enjoy. There can't be many films featuring a less likeable set of characters. The performances themselves are good; I'm becoming a bit of a fan of the versatile Blunt. Also liked the restrained Elfman score. While it looks good, the plot didn't strike me as credible or compelling, and I think it got a bit messy towards the end. It perhaps just lacks some memorable moments, or strong hooks. Seems like a bit of a wasted opportunity.

You can imagine the pre-production meetings for this film going along the lines of 'should we make this a slow, brooding psychological investigation of a woman coming to terms with heartbreak and alcoholism, or should we make it an exciting thriller?'. In the end it is probably about 70:30, and as a result, neither character nor excitement was built. Blunt does a good job when she is not looking like she has just climbed out of a well in 'the ring' but this was a mundane vision of a decent book

The Girl on the Train boasts strong performances from its cast (particularly Blunt) but still manages to make its characters come across as vapid and contrived. The film opts for a non-linear narrative, for the sole reason of manufacturing a mystery and manipulating the audience's perspective, before delivering its "Lifetime TV-movie" twist. It might have worked if any of the characters were remotely likeable. For me, the biggest twist was Danny Elfman's restraint in composing the score.

This is an absurd film that seems utterly unaware of it's own absurdity and is all the worse for it's bland sincerity. It's an adaptation of a very junky, very popular novel and it's a terrible adaptation. The plot feels cut down from a much longer one, but seems to have been cut down by removing randomly selected scenes. Scenes pop in and are treated as meaningful, but they aren't since they aren't connected to anything surrounding them.

At face value the melacholic tone and acting is interesting. When we start to delve into plot details then things rapidly go to shit. This seems to be a film that implies that people are not responsible when entering into bad relationships or other life choices. Pushing male/female gender relations into the victim and victimized category is quite lame. The slow burn is silly and contrived in the end especially when you can see it coming a mile away. The first third is genuinely engrossing.

Awful. I wanted to turn it off after the first 5-10 minutes. With all the voice over telling me about the characters, I thought I was reading a novel, not watching a film. But I was a captive audience, on a long flight with limited options, so I hung in. It never gets better. Too much telling, not enough showing. A bizarre interconnectedness among these characters ends in what was a completely ludicrous ending. No thanks.

I knew this wasn't going to live up to the hype once I started reading about the changes they were making to the plot. It just ended up being really, really messy and most of their changes seemed unnecessary, writing themselves into a corner and having to tie it all up nicely. However, all of the emotional impact of the ending gets lost in the confusion. Blunt is pretty good but the film lost track of what made the novel such a hard book to put down.

Reheated Gone Girl leftovers to be certain, but Gone Girl is magnificent and one of the best films of the last five years, so that's not so terrible. I was with it, enjoying drunken Emily Blunt. Some trashy but fun soap opera fluff. Disappointingly chaste, through! If this was made 20 years ago it would have been directed by someone like Paul Verhoeven and been wall-to-wall tits.

The set up was initially interesting, but quickly the plot became muddled and I wasn't sure what the point of it was, and with just about every main character being an unlikeable sociopath I wasn't particularly interested in finding out. Once the story finally got back on the rails (rails ... train ... see what I did there?) the ending was then fairly easy to predict. I haven't read the book, but from what I've heard it was better than this effort, although that wouldn't be too hard.

An unremarkable thriller, intriguing enough to keep you along for the ride. Hop on the train and grab a seat next to alcoholic Emily Blunt as we chug along through a murder mystery affair. The plot device of perception and an unreliable narrator is abused inception style as Blunt is forced to defog her booze and concussion fueled fog of the night the woman of her obsessions goes missing. Faced with possibly blacking out and murdering someone she must do her best detective impersonation.

Overly solemn tone doesn't help and Taylor's direction seems confused; a narrative dealing with multiple dopplegangers and indiscriminate time jumping needs a firmer hand. Performers are the stand-out here, with Blunt giving her all in a brilliant, no-holds-barred dramatic performance; props to Janney (who we don't see enough of) as the world-weary cop on the case. Goes over-the-top into ludicrousness by the overwrought finale, but holds on during a pretty gripping mid-section.

The Girl on the Train may be the biggest disappointment of 2016. Emily Blunt carries this film with another convincing and impressive leading performance. But otherwise at times I was both surprised and disappointed by how sloppy and dull this experience felt. The overall direction, screenplay and editing is all over the place and the serviceable supporting cast is forgettable. I didn't find this film unenjoyable by any means, but my expectations where high and I was left somehwat underwhelmed.

I loved the book - I didn't really like the movie. Maybe I was expecting too much, or maybe it's just that this story can't be translated onto the screen in its full glory... But it didn't work for me. Emily Blunt is amazing as Rachel and gives an painfully good portrayal of an alcoholic. The supporting cast was good as well, but it couldn't save the movie. Also, in my opinion, it tried too hard to be like Gone Girl.

Really genuinely pleased with a movie that I had high expectations for to begin with. I felt that the movie stayed relatively faithful to the source material (whereas its obvious comparative, Gone Girl, dove far off course multiple times). Emily Blunt is, at this point, a modern master craftswoman of her art. She can play anything with believability. Props to Haley Bennett as well! I love unreliable narrator stories, and the narrative style did not confuse me as it seems to have done to many.

Alcoholic Emily Blunt saves what otherwise is a trainwreck of a mystery movie. If you remove the "whodunit?" aspect of plot, the entire second act of the movie is basically pointless. What starts as an intriguing examination of unreliable narrators and relationships becomes a by-the-numbers procedural mystery that ends with a laughable thud.

Blunt is wonderful, as per usual, showcasing her diversity, this time as she plays a drunk, very damaged woman. The rest of the cast is okay and all, and the direction is also decent... but outside of Blunt, nothing sticks out. With that said, I'm seeing some low scores now and I don't understand because it's an interesting enough genre flick with a few twists and turns, enough to be entertaining. I just wish I had never seen the trailer, and this is kinda like Gone Girl but not as good.

Blunt carries the entire film, but still quite entertaining Unfortunately a typical example, we withhold practically everything from the viewer and give little to nothing to unravel the mystery, so that in the end we can have an exaggeratedly unpredictable twist, even if it is predictable! Also a typically modern movie; in the end, of course, women's solidarity for no reason.Several women behave completely wrong and don't take responsibility for their actions, but in the end men bad - women good!

I wasn't as keenly aware of the Lifetime-original-ness of it all when reading the novel, perhaps because I was free to imagine various dowdy English people as the characters rather than the film's bevy of blandly attractive H&M models. Still, despite the perfume commercial direction, telenovela acting (Blunt notwithstanding) and weird half-transposition to America, the bones of a decently effective thriller remain.

Very suspensfull thriller that had my heart really pounding at times, especially as it neared the end when even though it was more obvious what was happening the viewer was left unsure as to how it would finally pan out amongst the numerous (logical) twists. I'm not a fan of movies that use flashbacks, as this one does, but in this case these methods were used very well and were actually very important to the plot. Not sure how well it will stand up to repeated watches but it might just do it

Perfunctory and overly cautious. The performances are all fine, as is the script, cinematography, etc, etc. but it’s all way too safe. It should have been darker, raunchier, bloodier and more dangerous. I certainly didn’t dislike it and it has its moments. However it’s not as narratively smart as it thinks it is and when the conclusion finally arrives you can almost hear Taylor clap his hand together and shout ‘ta-dah!’

I'd rather just ride a train. This movie had one giant pitfall to overcome. Can it be translated from it's wonderful book form to a workable movie? The answer is no. The main reason for that is that the Girl on the Train book by Paula Hawkins is about a hero with a faulty alcoholic memory that is trying to solve a missing person case. This part is hard to do because so much of it is internal. Her trying to work things out in her sloshed mind...

It doesn't compare favourably with the excellent Gone Girl, which is unfortunate because of some of the parallels between the two. Blunt does some really great work, but just isn't supported enough by what on paper was a really strong cast. I wanted to see so much more of Alison Janney's detective for example. It's a shame, because the issue of domestic violence and coercive abuse could really do with a good airing.

Another rubbish throwback thriller that fails to engage even as much as its decades-old predecessors did. A dull and predictable whodunnit aside perhaps from the final twist, and that's only due to the guilty party performing such a ridiculous personality somersault into a cartoon baddie. The somewhat pretentious and irritating hue from the (unimpressive) acting, directing and script doesn't sit with the schlocky story either. A waste of time.

I didn't hate the film, but there were certain parts I didn't buy and it also felt like it was trying too hard to "trick" you, it forgot to introduce enough characters for you to be shocked. This is a solid thriller. The direction isn't exceptional but it doesn't detract from the film much at all. I think everyone is comparing this to Gone Girl in their heads, and maybe Taylor was influenced by it, but the comparison is folly. I'm just gonna say this, and roll your eyes if you want, but some of the criticism for this film -- both professional and amateur -- has reeked of sexism. Foreboding trios of women are found throughout ancient mythology and literature. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, three witches foretell the Scottish king's ultimately tragic future. The Girl on the Train is a real disappointment - a film that looks good on paper, but flimsily collapses after actually seeing it. The narrative is weak and plodding, never giving you reason to invest yourself in it. It adds up to very little, and gives itself up too quickly. The flashbacks stunt its forward progress and make things a little confusing. If not for a strong cast, The Girl on the Train probably would have made its debut on cable.
