The Girl Downstairs

The premise is surprisingly mean here and the scullery maid is a bit of a dumb stereotype who is very impractically dressed like a doll from It's A Small World yet this movie had its charm.

This was all kinds of sweet! Maybe forcefully so, but so many cute moments! Franciska Gaal who made her American debut with The Buccaneer (1938), was much more at home here in this which was supposed to be a lesser creation. She's so much like Mary Pickford, or Marion Davies even, which works for this kind of film. And I got to hand it to Franchot Tone who seemed to have a lot of fun in this even if some scenes felt a little like he was in auto-pilot. But him in a drunken mood was ace!
