The Ghoul

he's only an executive producer here, but tonally this fits pretty snugly into wheatley's grimy oeuvre. while it's clearly a directorial debut and too clever for its own good, i love it for plunging into the ugliest recesses of the mind when so many psychological horror films can only represent them symbolically. would that more films about mental illness seemed like they were made by the mentally ill.

Early Aronfsky meets Lynch in this stripped-down psychodrama that has a very strange spiritual connection to Edgar Allen Poe's story of the same name. Tone and narrative aside it's the sterling performances of the cast that carry this one. Though conceptually this feels like a straightlaced Philip K Dick story, which is always a plus in my book!

Ooft! This got me thinking, which was a challenge on a Saturday night after a few drops of single malt. I'll need to give it another blast, but I rather enjoyed this strange, ambiguous thriller. The music and direction were solid, but it was the performances that really made it engaging. Likeably unsettling.

Another one of those films where the fact that sod all happens is supposed to be a virtue. No thanks
