The acting is strong throughout and while it takes a while to get to the horror/revenge elements are great. The way some of the scenes were put together ad me going back and watching them again and had me trying to get friends to check this movie out. I'd buy this if I could ever find it on DVD.

Takes a while to get going, but the last 45 minutes or so are very intense and unique. Beautiful looking throughout, a strong yet quiet visual style.

This is probably the best known adaptation of the kabuki play "Yotsuya Kaidan" (there are many). It's a fairly routine film from a story and characters perspective, but the film's vibrant colours and gory, hallucinatory visuals are really something.

I liked the opening, and the horror part in the final third was pretty good too, but the middle felt way too contrived for my liking.

Maybe if the husband weren't so craven this would have had some teeth. As it is, it's pro forma horror.

An outstanding adaptation of a ghost story. The bloodshed seems a bit excessive, but that just lends more oomf to what is anyway a kabuki-theatrical kind of plot. The acting, directing and visuals are very satisfying.
