Having seen a mere single other movie in Peckinpah's filmography, I don't have a whole lot to compare it to. But as a McQueen movie, there are better choices. MacGraw is pretty unlikable and the movie has a lingering aimless feel to it, in spite of it actually almost entirely focusing on its namesake getaway. I can't say I'm all that impressed, but neither was I very disappointed.

Tense, violent, and pretty stylish, it was a fun watch. None of the characters is very likable or enjoyable, though; McQueen has his detached cool charm and is generally pretty savvy, but his character is pretty inconsistent and hard to pin down. I'm no criminal mastermind, but there were times when I was rolling my eyes at some his decisions, while at other times he seemed to have this superhuman criminal intuition.

Solid. Not a masterpiece but a nice take on the bonnie and clyde type-film.

Great editing, decently paced, Steve McQueen is cool as hell, and a fun story where it's easy to root for the protagonists. Ali MacGraw is awful as the love interest and I could've lived without that weak ending but overall pretty good. The 70's blood also looks really cheesy but it actually didn't take me out of the film.

Explosions, car chases, and gunfights aplenty, The Getaway is probably Peckinpah's most commercial film. Creative touches shine in the editing of the opening sequence and the intensely gripping shootouts. McQueen and MacGraw are cool as hell, but some eccentric characters and an out of place soundtrack sadly break-up the excitement. Some may criticize the misogynistic tendencies in the characters, but they are criminals and Peckinpah portrays them as such. Well-crafted and classic thriller.

It's a potboiler, sure, but who beside Peckinpah would rope such genuine American living into a flick like this? The parades, garbagemen, parks on the riverfront; after the devastating oppression of the brilliant prison sequence, the day to day world is a beautiful place, even if it is full of unshakable mustachioed psychos and bad men in cowboy hats. McQueen and MacGraw both prove to be masters of their limited ranges, but Wolfe's editing and the sound department are the true stars.

A very enjoyable film with some great performances, good structure and a slightly unusual mix of steady pacing and action scenes. Although the film is structured well, it is slightly let down by some of the more stupid elements of the plotline creating moments that leave you wondering why characters made certain decisions and whether this film is meant to be semi-realistic, or just a madcap portrayal. Still, McQueen is excellent and predictably cool against the host of black-toothed badddies.

A decent enough McQueen flick, but I can't help but wonder how much better it would have been with a better actress than MacGraw.

Just utter nihilism. Detached, point blank, almost mechanical. Any one viewer's mileage may vary, but I appreciate that no accommodations are made in the way of a moral compass. No sympathetic anti-hero, no redemption arcs, no comeuppance. These are thieves and murderers, after all! Rock solid, with a few particularly extraordinary set pieces (the heist, the train station, the gun store).

A man encourages his wife's infidelity, then struggles to handle it. Almost a comedy of remarriage, and an exploration of diverse masculinities (McCoy, Beynon, Rudy, Harold, even Laughlin, with his back pocket pamphlet), but the central relationship takes a long time to warm up (though it does, eventually). MacGraw was critical of her own performance, but I've a definite soft spot for her (and of all actresses, she's the one who most resembles jgreenwood, I think: something about the mouth).

Haven't seen much Steve McQueen but he looked very robotic in this, and Ali MacGraw is yet to be good in anything that I've seen so far. Some pacing issues, as there are at least 4 scenes in this that made me say out loud at my tv "Why is this taking so long?"

McQueen has enough cool to stand his ground in a Peckinpah film and has enough action prowess to make it exciting. The film moves along at a decent pace but it does lack the deep dive into its characters that some of Peckinpah's more personal works thrive on. I won't say that MacGraw ruins any scenes, but she sure doesn't help them.

fazlasıyla yavan. peckinpah hikayeyle pek ilgilenmemiş gibi ama sanki genel olarak hiçbir şeyle ilgilenmemiş. sinematografi sıradan, hikaye anlatımı da fazla boş olunca ikinci sınıf aksiyon filmlerini andırıyor. hikayenin karakter çalışması olanağı güçlüyken karaktere dair bir şey yok. walter hill'in kendi elinde ufak çaplı bir klasik olabilirmiş bonnie and clyde oynayışları üzerinden dahi. müzikse çok sakil duruyor. ama o açılış sekansı...

Not Peckinpah's finest that I've seen, but isn't his worst I've seen either, and his usual violent flair is present. McQueen is good. The story is straightforward, but a bit dull. It actually sounds like there was a chance at a different ending, but seems like McQueen meddled a bit with the film. A decent watch, but it probably won't wow anyone.

It's obvious that The Getaway was an assignment for Peckinpah: it only really springs to life during the action sequences, which unfortunately happen too infrequently. In their place we get a routine heist-and-betrayal plot by Hill that is completely by the book, totally bereft of surprise or excitement, and wooden acting by McQueen and MacGraw who don't share much chemistry despite their offscreen romantic involvement. The final shoutout in a sleazy hotel is thrilling, but it isn't enough.

There's a killer introductory scene that puts you in McQueen's mindset perfectly, as well as a tense bank heist turned car chase, but the rest of the film putters around. The Sally Struthers b-plot is embarrassingly tone-deaf and not even a third-act Slim Pickens appearance can do much to stand out.

I never really thought Steve McQueen was very good and this didn't change my mind. Ali MacGraw is a horrible actress that had looks and connections but not much else. All the side characters were universally terrible as was the soundtrack. I didn't mind the slow deliberate pace and the action scene were pretty decent.

The drama of Peckinpah's films seems to hinge on the code of honor between the leads, usually men. Here, the key relationship occurs between a married couple. Cool idea, and Steve McQueen does his part; unfortunately, Ali MaGraw, with bad--wooden--acting does not. (Seems like they made the same mistake in casting Cindy Crawford in the remake)ps68

This heist/couple-on-the-run flick is the least original of Pekinpah's films I've seen so far. The special touch that makes this film good is grey morality of characters, sort of a shadow of gender politics prominent in Straw Dogs.

Sam Peckinpah tries hard to be cool. He craves to be both fashionably strong and intellectually artistic. When he tries to be both simultaneously, as during the beginning, he fails completely. But when he lets the action unravel without much intrusion from his artistic illusions, his mastery as a conductor of suspenseful, concise and memorable action scenes is apparent. And it's mostly those scenes (such as the classic ending) that really stand out. An uneven and outdated yet interesting film.

McQueen is real good at channelling the anguish of Peckinpah. As usual with his films (both those folks), this is a real boys film with an underlying unease permeating the car-chases, shoot-outs, women-slapping, and cool sunglass-wearing.

Slightly disappointing. It's a good action movie, but that's all it achieves. Couple of goofy moments counterbalance some good ones. The out-of-place music score undercuts the tension. It's a mix of good and bad execution of fairly standard ideas. Another Peckinpah that falls short for me. The stare-off with the kid on the train was awesome though.

What a boring heist movie. Many of the shots are way too long, and the first half hour is brutally slow. Most of the actors are completely wooden, including McQueen. Not very well put together.

It's good, but it has a slew of problems. I think the interesting thing to point out is that about half of the people who see this consider it a classic and the other half think it's terrible. It's not bad, but it has its issues. The soundtrack is embarrassingly out of place.

There was a lot of Sam Peckinpah in it, but scenes between action were pretty lame. I did not like much of MacGraw's part nor find any chemistry between two. Sally then again took all liberties with fun. The odd score was nice.

I enjoyed this even though the opening drags on way too long and MacGraw's performance is comparable to a card board cutout. This has several great shoot outs and some interesting characters - the only thing missing was a good car chase.

Tough guys with guns, lots of cheap blood, and women getting slapped around. Yep, it's a Peckinpah. But it's tempered somewhat to make it more palatable for the non-fan. His usual nihilism is balanced out by the redemptive ending, and his misogyny (in full effect with the Sally Struthers character) is balanced by the strength of the Ali McGraw character. The film is a tense and well-constructed heist-gone-wrong flick, which I usually find quite enjoyable. One of the better Peckinpahs, IMHO.

Quite a coincidence that stripping the story down to ~the essence~ resulted in the "sleekest", most commercial version, without most of the interesting and original stuff. I guess it's hard to imagine a big action-romance then with an intensely sexual couple whose lovemaking is teased the whole way only to climax in a literal pile of shit. But forgoing the pit and haunting near-horror ending, for what? PRIME CUT is probably a better "Jim Thompson movie" that any actual (American) adaptation.

A very effectively paced heist thriller for the most part, it's got the car scenes, shootouts, and music that one expects to see and hear. Steve McQueen is great, but unfortunately for me, Ali MacGraw did not quite have the acting chops to shine. I read that she was unhappy with her own performance, too, though there's definitely chemistry between the two main leads that reached out to real life, as well.

Steve McQueen's magnetic presence holding a shotgun is simply does it all. Not one of the best by Peckinpah, but certainly a hell of a genre-bending ride -- neo-western, heist, road movie --, helped by quite an array of weird characters -- Rudy as the ultimate batshit craziest one. Some sequences feel specially well-directed, like the one in the train, with McQueen trying to recover the suitcase from a stranger, and the showdown at the hotel.

As a lover of 60's and 70's "root for the antagonist" films, this should have been right up my alley. But it didn't work for me. While McQueen and MacGraw acted great, the material was just too slow and drawn out. Sally Struthers' screaming and whining didn't help at all, but the film was tedious before she ever got to the screen. The ending was a bit surprising though.
