Hildy Johnson, newspaper reporter, is engaged to Peggy Grant and planning to move to New York for a higher paying advertising job. The court press room is full of lame reporters who invent stories as much as write them. All are waiting to cover the hanging of Earl Williams. A solid, fast-talking comedy classic. Sure, not as memorable as "His Girl Friday", but it's a piece of movie history, and part of cinematic literacy--any serious movie buff should know this picture.

Too many loud-mouths! Shouting all picture long. Some of it was fun and there was always something happening, but a bit over the top and messy. Yes, some good performances going on from the likes of "Mr.Suave" Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, along with several character actors. This production was more suited for the stage I felt, but still enjoyable. Was even nominated for several Oscars, Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Adolphe Menjou). Didn't win any.

Hard-boiled journalist torn between boss and girl; adaptation from a play is apparent in the concentration on a single room. At times requires as much thought from the viewer as Lubitsch but with little of his grace, though it’s well shot. Some unsubtle Democratic politics (at the time meaning: anti Red Scare, pro racism). No intellectual dimension whatsoever; the learned European character is a buffoon who immediately gets shot. His Girl Friday is smoother, but not better.

An enjoyable, fast paced version of the story that is improved upon greatly with His Girl Friday (and the later Wilder version). The gender switch in the next version really adds a lot to it, but this is a pretty entertaining telling that has some good stuff.

This is supposed to be a comedy but I never found it funny. All the characters are pretty unlikeable which hampered my enjoyment a bit as well.

There's something to be said about comic timing though, and everyone chattering so fast I had to use subtitles killed alot of bits for me. close to calling this a museum piece if the story and jabs at the sensationalism and occasional downright dishonesty of the press weren't so miserably relevant today. Half a dozen reporters witness the same events and tell half a dozen different stories (devils in the details, eh?). Humorous yet horrifying

Fast paced but often inaudible and shouty dialogue driven newsroom drama. Old fashioned and despite some interesting camera work- visually dull.

Lightning fast dialogue, from the play, story a bit creaky. A bit better than entertaining.

As expected, it's very funny, but His Girl Friday is a better adaptation in every way. Not only does the gender change add a great dimension to that film, the comic timing is much sharper.

More ruthless and not as funny as His Girl Friday. The gender reversal in Hawks' film add an extra level that leaves Milestones' movie feeling somewhat quaint. Adolph Menjou is terrific though.
