Badly designed and manipulative pseudo-documentary, attempting to coherently explain the fictional side of sleep paralysis with tales of alien abduction in an Alaskan town. With a hole ridden story, poor pretence documentary scenes and some ugly editing The Fourth Kind soon becomes evident for the farce it really is. What makes me most angry about this is the lost potential. Some core concepts are primevally chilling and could have gone far in competent hands. Here they only provide minor jumps.

"Please be advised," Jovovich forewarns the filmgoer straight to the camera, "that some of what you're about to see is extremely disturbing." Purported docudrama, more accurately documalarkey, about a whispery psychologist, as interpreted by Jovovich, who stumbles on a case of serial alien abductions in Nome, Alaska, though the film is half over before she puts a name to it. The blend of badly acted "re-enactments" and "actual video," sometimes sharing a split-screen, is laughably unconvincing.

While you are watching this, if you are to believe what they say - "based on true events" - you can enjoy this with a feeling of "wow, really?". After the movie is done, and 5 mins of Googling later when you realize that the whole thing was a big lie, you kick yourself.

Looking past the awful "true story!!!" gimmick and generally stupid plot, this may be one of the most visually tacky films I've ever seen. Not necessarily because it looks cheap (though to be fair, it's budget was only $10 million), but every editing trick, After Effects filter, and half-baked attempt to integrate "FOUND FOOTAGE" into the narrative looks like what I would have done had I directed a movie when I was 11 years old and didn't know better.

A lot of work put into a piece that's trying to convince you it's real. It had some creepy scenes, but when you realize it's tailored to try and make you actually believe in it, you are left with feelings of amusement and disgust.

Trying to establish some credibility at the beginning the movie intercuts between seemingly real interviews and their re-enactions, scenes of hypnose sessions and the main actresses statement that "it's up to you what to believe". Besides they use the same weak stuff that you mainly find with alien, abduction and UFO followers like tapes which are of a very bad quality. Additionally, performances were mediocre only that I didn't know the story kept me watching it to the end.

Doubtful of it's authenticity of being based on real facts I ended up Googling the film to find news stories which reveal that the "authentic" tapes are, in fact, not real. Still, the fact that I had to Google gives the movie some credit. I can't deny I found the inter-cut scenes of the "authentic" tapes and the re-enactments jarring. Too bad because honestly some of the "authentic" tapes are pretty freaky.

The first twenty minutes are ok. Before watching, I met two people who were unsure if this was a real documentary (in one case) or certain this WAS (in the other). (Then again, I once met someone who thought 'Blair Witch' footage was real too.) This reflects, I believe, not so much the movie's brilliance - hardly - as the fictional quality of the concept 'media literacy', and, even worse, the tendency of the falling rate of intelligence (as a socio-technico-economically constituted phenomenon).

I don't know if the actual footage is real or not, I've heard both, I don't really care. If it is real it could be some of the creepiest stuff ever. but the format of the movie itself was awful. half the movie is in split screen with the filmed scene running at the same time as the actual footage. kinda pointless. Just pick one. And whenever anything interesting is about to happen in the movie the camera cuts out. Creepy, but done terribly.

Unavoidable to comment without *SPOILERS* - tiresome mockumentary (I guess?) belabours its apparent documentary credentials with the dreary droning of a drunk crank at a seedy bar – I can buy fiction presented as wink-wink fact ala PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, but not shifty, outright lying about a conceit – it gives the whole film a pointless, shaggy dog quality making it impossible to engage with. Had the ingredients for an interesting take on an alien invasion without the fatally bungled set-up.

I saw this in the theater in one of my first ever screener experiences and it stayed with me. Now, a part of that is because of the ambience of that theater, gasping in fear and awe, but a part of that was believing in what I was watching. It's made really well, and really believabily. Just the little things. The little imperfections that wouldn't make you think they just shot the movie twice with different actors. They were pretty smart on many ways.

Very bad film but I've gained a small appreciation for it after seeing how angry some people are over it. Hint: If you thought the story & "found footage" might have been real, it's not the movie you should be angry at. I'm still not sure why the director decided to take the "true story" approach or if he even intended to fool anyone.

So very fake (does anyone even believe these 'documentary' horror stories anymore?) and yet they try so hard to make you think its real its almost insulting. Still, the 'archived footage' was genuinely disturbing at times ("I AM...GOD" brrrr!) and you get some outstandingly gorgeous scenery of the pristine northern wilderness that supposedly surrounds Nome (I was very disappointed to learn that real Nome is actually nothing like how it is portrayed here).

The Fourth Kind is not worth a watch, especially if you've heard any of the "hoax" talk before you watch it (and you have if you've read this review). I don't think that matters though, because even if you're fooled, you'll want to learn more, and you'll discover the truth anyway, which will likely cause you to have an unfavorable opinion of this movie. There's just nothing here apart from being a "true" story to keep you engaged.

It tried to get a sort of Blair-witch-esque feel going for it, but never really suceeded. I found myself not caring about any of the characters, and what was supposed to scare us just seemed really lame. The only reason to watch this movie is really the acting abillities of Mila Jovovich. Otherwise, it's pretty unconvincing.

Striking and powerful film! As a film but more so as a documentary. I usually don't like documentary style films, but what this film does is show original footage often side-by-side with story footage neccessary to connect plot points and tell the story, but the original footage which is claimed to be all real is so shocking and amazing I have to give this film one of my highest recommendations.

I was amazed at this film. I never like documentary style films, but this one was great. The real footage they used seemed distracting until further on in the film, when the events were so dramatic that they would not be believable without real footage. It did seem convenience that the tapes distorted at the most crucial points but there have been successful tests of magnetic hover engines, and magnetism that strong would probably distort a tape. And Sumerian? That's interesting.

[Spoilers] When I had just watched this, bearing in mind its authenticity as in question, it was a bad film that was still a fascinating failure for its blurring between reality and fiction. Then it turned out the authentic recordings were faked, making the film even more exploitative and trite, but also a gleefully subversive gem. Not only would William Castle be proud of it, but after seeing this documentaries are going to be more questionable in their legitimacy thinking back to this.

For anyone who has read about these alleged phenomena, this story is both predictable and ridiculous. The whole owl/alien thing, classy. Sumerian possession, WTF? The worst thing about it is the useless and irritating method of presentation, with two actors for every role, split frames, and a dramatization alongside the movie. Then insane stuff starts happening in the dramatizations and the film makes no attempt to explain it, despite having committed to fantasy already. Total crap.

"The Fourth Kind" deserves to be a better movie, as I was totally into the concept. The story, however, is so spliced together from bits and pieces of characters and plot points that never mesh or become fleshed out. The director disguises this with a failed documentary approach intertwined with a Hollywood reenactment. Despite some tense moments, this isn't a complete movie, and it fails to prey on viewers with its proposed foundation of realism.

What is with the idea these "faux" footage scenes, are they intending to scare us, because this is about the 10th time a film was gone with this marketing scheme. We dont fall for it anymore. The whole blurry camera during the so called abduction scenes was nonsense as well. Show me these abductions, show me the aliens, watching someone begin to float off a bed and then no camera feed anymore was a terrible way of releasing the tension. Awful, awful film that tries to build suspense by taking a found footage angle. Unfortunately the filmmaker can't leave well-enough alone and keeps beating the audience over the head with the credibility of his tale, by alternately showing us "real footage" and "re-enactments" starring actors like Will Patton and Milla Jovavich. What we're left with is a lot of SyFy style jump scenes and no real scares.
