If Michael Bay made this, it would've cost 2 billion dollars, had more shots of Milla Jovavich (working on cars, tossing hair, running, etc all in slow motion), Bruce Willis would wear a thong for comedic value and Chris Tucker would've been a robot. Thank you, Luc Besson. Thank you.

Ages since I saw this, and it doesn't hold up all that well. Sets and setting are its strengths, the whole movie looks 'bandes dessinées' as all hell. But I'd rather read something drawn by Moebius than see a live-action approximation of his style with two-dimensional characters, goofy-ass music and cringeworthy annoying shit instead of 'whoa, cool!' moments. Chris Tucker almost ruins the movie single-handedly.

An ungodly mess. Promising hokey prologue, in Egypt, in 1914; dopey mood-dampening attempts at comedy; ugly creatures, costumes, haircuts, sets, special effects. Besson, who was already thinking Hollywood while still in France (La Femme Nikita), proves conclusively that he truly belongs. He can squander money with the best of them.

Putting aside some of the dodgy performances and a pretty cumbersome script, The Fifth Element is a highly imaginative and original piece of sci-fi. This film has both comedy and action. Take a trip to the future and find out how it would be to live in the year of flying cars and aliens. Bruce Willi brings all of the action while Chris Tucker doesn't hesitate to bring all of the funny. This is a great movie to watch if you ever have a day where you're feeling futuristic.

One of the most whacked-out film experiences of all time. This takes everything a 14-year-old boy could possibly want in a movie and throws it all up on the scream in a delightful mess of a ride. It doesn't matter that it doesn't make sense; it's too fun to pay any attention to.

Of all of the sci-fi action films out there, The Fifth Element is among the best. It's non-stop fun. The story is exciting, and the characters are all unique and memorable. Bruce Willis leads the film with super cool gusto, and his unique blend of action and sarcastic humor are perfect for the film. Really good!

This is my fifth attempt at a review and there's always an element missing. I can't land on a joke. Ironic praise for Lee Evans? Noting the paucity of actual action set pieces? Pining for a Tommy Lister Jr. presidency? Dragging in Paul W. S. Anderson for some reason. Dragging in Paul Thomas Anderson for the previous some reason. Mentioning my son's boredom with the opera scene as proof opera can't be entertaining? Is it a pun? Is that the route? The Fifth Millament? That's awful. Truly awful.

I mean they really dove into this 110% didn't they? The peak-career Jean-Paul Gaultier costumes, the opera-techno blue lady, Chris Tucker as a drag queen. For all it's bad writing, bad acting and racist and sexist moments, I still can't help but appreciate how committed Besson and crew were to truly embracing just being weird. P.S. Besson is a pedophile (if that wasn't already obvious from watching Leon)

Overblown fantasy film is a collage of underdeveloped first draft ideas which never kicks into high gear; the fun, candy shop set design turns sickly and ugly when no attempt is made to explore or examine its dynamics. Disparate elements (ahem) clash uneasily with each other; Willis is almost sleepily laid-back, while Oldman's bizarre bit of scenery chewing feels like its own separate movie! Fatally torpedoed by Tucker's initially amusing but ultimately wearying mugging in the second half.

I once considered it one of the best science fiction adventures of all time, but it did not hold up nearly as well as I had thought and hoped. The visuals (including the really cool bad guy creatures) are still great, but most of the performances are kind of bad. It most definitely helps quite a bit that Milla Jovovich is smoking hot, but that fact does even begin to make up for Chris Tucker's obnoxius Ruby Rhod, a character so intolerable that it is hard to believe one's hurting eyes and ears.

Don't let the 'thriller/suspense' tag fool you, there's humor in damn near every scene. I can't help but love the genre nods - from Twi'leks and Leia buns to Ian Holm and Brion James trapped in the same room (the A.I. from Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner). It's an honest celebration of sci-fi with a unique spin.

Painful. It's attempts at humour are at best completely unfunny and obvious, and at worst highly grating and annoying (Chris Tucker's character in particular is mindnumbingly irritating). An eccentric and underestimated film about the cyclical nature of existence: the yin and yang of creation and destruction, masculine and feminine, life and death. It's an action movie paradigm shift that humanity's savior is a woman, the ultimate force of creation, but she can only be facilitated by Bruce Willis racking up a body count. Besides all that, it's just a fun and frantic mix of action and comedy. The plotting is dense, the production design is Gilliamesque, and the cast is stellar.

It embraces the silliness and fun that's behind every space opera, and basically throws seriousness out the window. The coincidences get a little bit ridiculous, especially because Besson feels required to insert one in order to have a scene change. But the future design is cool, the direction is enthusiastic, and the movie is enjoyable, so that forgives a lot of the cliched, contrived plot.

This film is like your wacky Christmas jumper; it's completely dreadful, and you wouldn't be seen dead entering a cinema in it, but it comes out every so often and you can't help but enjoy wearing it for a couple of hours. Yes, Chris Tucker is the living embodiment of "God awful", but for every scene in FE that is terrible, there are some jokes and decent scenes (the opera scene is memorable) to make up for them. Jovovitch is very lovable and hey, it's daft, annoying, memorable, terrible and fun

Nice world-building and it has a great 1-minute action sequence, but Willis is underutilized and the entire idea of the romance is both gross (she's basically a newborn) and underdeveloped (as far as I can tell, they're in love because she's beautiful and he's around). I don't understand the debate on this one, which I found largely underwhelming. The costumes are wacky and entertaining, and I liked the design of the ships and the evil planet, but the story and plotting are needlessly complicated, and many scenes move by too quickly. Some performances are great (Willis, Oldman, and Holm), but others' are monotonous (Lister's) or too over the top (Tucker in particular moves from campy to tiresome quickly, as is his tendency.). Imaginative but uneven.

A film that manages the rare feat of creating a universe from whole cloth which feels lived in while also reflecting its creators' vivid and wondrous imaginations. It's a wild ride, Terry Gilliam with a more playful edge, and it virtually never slows down to catch its breath. It's also just sentimental enough to push my buttons (the fifth element is ~*~LOVE~*~) but funny enough to get away with it - you can really see how this would've influenced Futurama. And Ratchet & Clank, for that matter.

I dig the gaudiness of the movie; unfortunately, the film focuses more on its two bland leads rather than the far more eccentric and amusing personalities most tend to remember the film for. Also gotta get a kick out of how Leelo apparently studied the meaning of every word in the dictionary but somehow never comprehended what the word "war" meant, which becomes further eyerolling by the sudden, juvenile moral preaching the narrative does after the fact.

It's been called the best film Terry Gilliam never made, and it's a real guilty pleasure. A script that could've been better written by a 5-year-old and flat characters portrayed by by actors whose performances would seem garish and over the top at a pantomime. The bizarre costumes and colourful vistas distract you just long enough for you to suspend disbelief and enjoy the film for what it is: a mindless visual feast.
