The Fate of Lee Khan

The Fate of Lee Khan focuses even more on "the inn" than Dragon Gate Inn did, and it pays off big time. Hu is fanatical about letting the audience know the space, and the characters that inhabit it. Everything he's known for, the glimpse cutting, the trampolines, the weight of the weapons, are in full display. We even get more hand to hand combat than Come Drink With Me and A Touch of Zen had. He eliminates the supernatural powers of his earlier stuff, and sticks with big action in small places.

This is the kind of movie that is very basic and simple, taking place for 90% in a single location, but which is very well constructed. The character of Lee Khan differs from the usual genre trope of a clear cut evil antagonist. Lee Khan is shown to be a very intelligent and sophisticated person, whose political views even sound sensible. While the movie has multiple ass-kicking female heroines, it is Feng Hsu as the icy sister who steals the movie.

They really spend a lot of time in the inn so whenever they go outside with horses it's a treat, like an old western. Interesting this was hailed as a major film for women when most of them end up dead in the end. Fav scene: everything in the final 20 mins of battles---classic wuxia flying, betrayals, backflips, crazy dodges, etc.

Little does the secret service head know, the owner of the Inn he's going to wants him out of the picture and the Han dynasty returned to power. Hu is constantly spinning plates. Our characters are looking out for spies, fighting off thieves, planning for Khan's arrival, and tending to the usual duties of an inn.
