I managed to avoid this for twenty years. It was clearly made for nine year olds despite the sexual content they limply bizkited in. Everyone is right about the final heist scene being effective. I imagine I'm in for the rest of the series because I'm a glutton for punishment but I have every faith that they will get better because it would be a much greater feat to get worse.

This I saw ages ago and thought it was boring. Also I had no idea what was happening most of the time. Vin Diesel's face didn't help to explain anything either. It's a hard movie to hate since it doesn't attempt to be anything other than dumb entertainment but still doesn't quite succeed. The sequels are variously dumber so I'd go for them if you really have to. But you really don't.

"The Fast and the Furious"(2001) seems quaint compared to the ridiculous blockbuster franchise of cleverly titled sequels it spawned. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker star in this "Gran Turismo" and "Need for Speed" streetcar racing ascetic, "Point Break"(1991) remake. This mediocre action crime drama plays out like a music video oozing with machismo car porn, and a level of acting that can at-best aspire to winning a MTV Movie Award. Fast and the furious is the monument for stupid action. you need no story, no good actors, no brain. just some 90-60-90 bunnys with silicon tits, some pumped up steroid idiots and a couple of tuned cars...great idea, there are enough idiots out there. and they will love to see 20 sequels with more silicon tits, more stupid bad ass idiots and less story than the first one.anything I forgot ??

How this script ever went into production let alone became the bedrock of one of the bigger non-super hero action movie franchises in later years, is beyond me. That being said, it does have a sort of campy feeling to it that makes for an excellent guilty pleasure, and the joy of re-watching the early 00's in all it's glory is well equal part funny and terrifying.

Horrific music and dated effects make this a real drag: 0-60 in 60 minutes, watchable for the iconic neon cars and the final-heist-into-last-act, which is genuinely engaging. Otherwise pretty painful.

Hated as a kid but my opinion flipped last rewatch. It's completely crass and full of testosterone and has enough heart to make it palatable. Male bonding has never been more strictly heterosexual. The stunts are eye-popping and despite a lot of dull characters there's hardly a dull moment.

I have to give this movie credit as it created such a following for street racing pushing it from underground to mainstream. Sadly street racing is retarded and this film has caused so many bad flicks of the same genre it's ridiculous. Especially when one considers this film was just mediocre to being with.

I'm supposed to like films like this: fast cars, hot women, cool special effects, hip-hop soundtrack. The cars may have looked good, but the camera never showed them any love. The women were hot, but not enough skin (for this kind of movie). The special effects were awesome, but had little to do with moving the story along. The music: Ja Rule. Don't even watch it on a bet.

Top badass moment? Every weekend, 100s of youths go to roundabouts on industrial estates near the UK’s most boring towns, to watch idiots with small penises ruin their tyres, by trying to go around them very quickly in second-hand BMWs; now I know why. I watched this film for some practical tips as I drive speed-limited vans for a job, and have discovered nitrous oxide would really help me; I could just inhale it so I don't care about traffic delays anymore. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

(after repeat viewings) Back when the Fast Saga started out as a crime actioner about street racers stealing dvd players, with a heap of practical stunts that - for the most part - didn't defy the laws of logic, physics or gravity and in which its core theme was shown rather than told. Considering how every new entry in the franchise has become increasingly ridiculous, I was surprised to find how well this movie aged. Would've been even better had they used the right lens to frame close-ups.

Primarily it adequately gives what to expect from it; some dumb fun with fast cars, hot chicks and cool stunts. But it also tries to go for the whole Point Break plot of "undercover cop questioning his loyalties and befriends the criminals", but fails to really convey this through the emotion of the characters. Don't know who's to blame for this more, the acting or the writing. Probably both equally guilty.

hm.. the stuntwork was impressive, I really dug the turn-of-the-millennium dancehall soundtrack, the action scenes were pretty coherent... but it doesn't change that all of this felt like meaningless male power fantasy and noise. I don't care about any of the characters, which means I don't care about the plot. I came in expecting to hate it, and I came out ambivalent, so there's that.

It is full of now awkward looking cool moments, the dialogue is a bit stunted and the story tethers here and there. But as a timepiece, it is pretty interesting and the stunts are top-notch. Doing a full-scale stunt movie was a very good idea anyway and they did give the feel of the underground racing sub-culture quite well; although they sauced it up a bit too much. You wouldn't expect it to turn into such a long living franchise, but you never know these things.

The Fast and The Furious is a classic in my book. I have a lot of nostalgia and leeway with this (despite its obvious issues and ripoffs) because I grew up watching this. This is the start of Hollywood's most accidental franchise, and sometimes it's nice to take a step back when the franchise was at a simpler, less bombastic time. It ain't perfect, but I think anyone who has grew up with these movies have a fond appreciation for what these characters became overtime.

It's a bit of a mess of a film with character motivation and story elements all over the place. However, it also feels like such a wonderful product of its time because of the dialog, the way it was filmed, and the music used. It's not a good film, but it has some really fun moments in it.

I don't know what it is about this movie but I just love it. It's pure B-movie cheese, essentially a remake of Point Break but with the charm of being really outdated and tacky. The dialogue is solid gold, and the cast is pretty strong considering they could just chew the scenery but they take it seriously and the film is better off for it. Plus I have a bit of a thing for queer reading and this movie has PLENTY of that. It's beautiful. I'M IN YOUR FACE!

Back before crap started getting unrealistic, campy and almost a spoof of itself, a bunch of people (still family) drag raced and stole DVD players. This movie is like opening a time capsule for me. The effects have aged rather poorly and some of the dialogue is horrendous, but it’s honestly pretty well directed and mostly capably acted. Such a fun time. By no means a great movie, but it is entertaining.

The after-effects of this movie (i.e., chain auto parts stores trying to carry "tuner" parts, the sales surge in crappy flames stickers, and idiots slapping NOS stickers on their stock Civics) were of more entertainment value than the movie itself. Still, it's not a terrible movie, but it's equidistant from greatness.

It's hard to fault a film for being exactly what it set out to be: An immature testosterone fest. But that doesn't mean it's good either. This film has so many plot holes you could drive every one of the street racers through them. Sure, it's not supposed to be plot-driven, but they're impossible to ignore unless you go full brain-dead. Walker and Brewster have some chemistry but otherwise this is a forgettable film.

I mean, ultimately, the franchise is what it is, but at least in this first film, there are some attempts to flesh out the characters and their motivations. I do find the first film, with its much more pared down street stunts and practical effects, to be a bit more raw and interesting to the CGI fest that the franchise eventually becomes.

I thought this was a good movie. So basically a under cover cop who's trying to bust these street racers because they are stealing materials in big trucks. This is about gangs doing that and also racing each other. Then the undercover cop can't go through arresting Vin Diesel in this movie because he is in love with his sister. So the Cop tells them he's a cop. Then helps out Vin and the sister. End credit scene in this Vin is in Mexico.

It's 'Point Break' with cars. Pretty blatant rip off but without Bigelow's stylistic flair or the homoerotic undertones. This alone makes F&F feel like a redundant and inferior rehash, but on top of that, Cage and Jolie did car-based action better a year earlier in 'Gone in 60 Seconds'.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. On one hand, the audience gets its pretty cars, pretty girls, and high tension hand-delivered to them. At the same time, its low-caliber cast is given a hilariously unnatural script to a relatively standard plot. It's nice to see how far the franchise has come.

Having seen three assorted movies from this series, these movies are kind of like a big stupid friendly dog. Just really dumb, but generally harmless enough that you can't help but smile at it. This one is so much more restrained than the huge-budget later movies, but it surprised me with some creatively-executed action scenes. The biggest negative, I think, is that they seemed to have no idea how to end it, so it's kind of an awkward scramble to wrap up.

Somewhat entertaining, and to be completely honest I am probably projecting some of my feelings about the franchise as a whole on this one individual film, but such is life.
