DVD Obras-primas do Cinema

Almost too wholesome for a political movie, but it holds the ideals politics and politicians should have. More than anything this is a vehicle for Loretta Young to shine in using a Swedish accent and naive honesty. It worked. Got her the Oscar! I wouldn't go as far as say it's her best role, but she was without a doubt lovely as The Farmer's Daughter (1947).

I've heard this filmmaker compared to Capra, and, in a superficial sense, TFD-- my first Potter-- really does exemplify commonalities. But in truth this hardly extends beyond thematic trappings and mentality; through-and-through, Capra alone of the two has an extraordinary sensitivity to form, and so is necessarily and without doubt superior. Also, I learned that W. Wilson was a "friend of the working man."

Pleasant comedy about a young woman who through circumstance and a healthy dose of folky wisdom becomes politically (and romantically, of course) involved. It's kind of like Capra without the cinematic verve. Loretta Young won an Oscar for this, which is bewildering to me. Not that she's bad, but her character is pretty flat and she doesn't do much with it.

Cloying at times, but likable and entertaining. Loretta Young was a woman of grit and integrity, and creates a Katie Holstrom who has both.
