Costume melodrama spectacles with Pola Negri: not the thing people think of Lubitsch for now, but they were a signature at the time. Allowing this is 1918, there is some spectacle and exoticism to it (we've got the bit in the desert at the opening, and Negri has her dance moment). What there is barely any of is plot as we plod after Negri from one place to the next for an hour, with Jannings trailing along being exactly the sort of caricature villain people least miss from the silent days.

A ravishing Pola Negri and two real palm trees aside, this has unfortunately little else to offer in this day and age.

Nothing special, quite boring and not technically remarkable, being the exceptions the effort of filming a part in Egypt and, of course, the last minutes.

Mummy branding is tentative at best, but Pola Negri is quite captivating as the Egyptian slave dancer. It also has a surprisingly dire ending; an old world warning perhaps of mixing blood.
