Frustratingly thin, even insipid biopic establishes the Bakkers as shallow, superficial gargoyles and then has nowhere to go - are they sincere in their faith? Unrepentant shysters? Hopelessly naïve to the machinations of Falwell and his like? By never properly cracking the public facade, the film ultimately seems like a pointless and superficial actor's exercise, but with Chastain and Garfield giving it their all, plus a smarmy turn from D'Onofrio, it at least remains watchable.

Jim & Tammy Faye don't seem real. He is so mannered & unctuous & she so seemingly naive & childlike in the way she engages the world, I spent more than half the film wondering who they really were behind their saccharine personas & thinking this movie is a waste of time since it doesn't really know. By the end though, once Tammy (& even Jim) start going -sort of - offbrand & saying Christians should love gays, I thought "Wow, they really don't seem to be more than this" & felt some sympathy.

Grossly miscalculated from start to finish. Weaves awkwardly through comedy and drama without ever finding solid footing. Chastain is the only element at play that nimbly maneuvers the varying facets of the film. Elsewhere, director Michael Showalter never seems to decide whether to take Tammy Faye's faith seriously or not. On some occasions, the audience is called to champion her stances, but at other times, cooing heavenly choir is used to comedically underscore her prayers.

I liked this movie. Sike, April Fool's you dipshit. Just could not vibe with this film. Felt like I was watching the SNL sketch version of Chastain and Garfield doing the Bakker's. I don't mean any disrespect, I am a millennial who enjoys SNL, but keep the sketch to 5-10 minutes! I think I have lost focus on what I was discussing. Oh well, let's end this now.

A mostly bland and also somewhat tiresome biopic with an upper-tier performance from Chastain who disappears into her role. Garfield is right for his role too but his performance still bugged me. More than able supporting turns are given by two veterans, Cherry Jones and Vincent D'Onofrio, both of whom highly deserve awards vehicles of their own.

Good performances. Surprised to see Tammy Faye actually having good intentions through a lot of this. Still, a lot of the characters/people are so unsympathetic that there’s not much to root for. Good for learning about these people, although the old documentary is likely just as useful for this.

The woman had a fascinating life, charismatic personality, and soulful voice. Had the Tammy-Jim duo continued to spread love without blatant monetization of God, bad financial decision making and their complex inter-personal dynamic, their story would have taken a more positive turn. It is very moving to see their demise. All the actors did a tremendous job. The runtime of feature did not do adequate justice to the story. Full marks cause the movie was powerful enough to stir me.

Ok, tant mieux !

Televangelist Tammy Faye. Kocası Jim Baker ve Tammy Faye, Protestanlığı kullanıp, 1 televizyon ve show dünyasını anlatıyor. Yaşadığı lüks yaşam, dini kullanıp ranta çevirmek. Çok zeki 1 kadın. Jessica Chastain harika. Oscar kazanması şüphesizdi. Cherry Jones'da iyiydi. Filmin sonunda Hallelujah. Türkiye'nin Tansu Çiller'i

I really hate these Oscar-baity biopics, and this is below average for the genre. Chastain is impressive, but neither she nor Garfield are doing much acting, there are imitating to the point of parody. The biggest flaw of the film however is not making the viewer understand the appeal of these lunatics.

It glosses over some of the major reasons that brought down PTL and should not be viewed as a historically accurate recount of the rise and fall of the Bakkers. But I appreciate how they depicted Tammy Faye. She probably wasn’t as naïve as the film lets on, but she wasn’t an evil person either. It’s an introductory piece to TV evangelism but too fictionalized to pass as a biopic.

Chastain was incredible, but otherwise the movie never really works. The characters and situations are so cartoonish and absurd that it's very difficult to get fully absorbed. I think this problem is amplified because they try to cover the entire saga, rather than just focusing on one element. It moves too quickly to ever really connect with.

After listening to the Jon Ronson radio documentary about her interview with the gay pastor with AIDS, I was fascinated by her story. What a surreal and heady mix of deep discomfort and joy throughout. As permanent as those eyebrows, this odd world is now etched in my brain.

She had such an expressive, Dionysiac energy. She is a born entertainer and show person. Christianity was just an excuse for her, and God was just a l muse. Had she born to a non-conservative environment and was independent of men, she would have become a great artist. You see her not caring for politics in the movie. She is honest and childish, she can easily symphatize with LGBT individuals for instance. In that sense, there is a strong feminist story. +Chastain delivers a great performance.

What would have been, should have been an interesting biography tended to idolize Tammy instead of scrutinize her shortcomings. Poor direction and script here. Fantastic visual appeal and great performances saved this from being too bad.

Doesn’t question or challenge anything and feels quite hollow but that might be the intention-as the Bakers appear to be following their faith quite blindly and naively. Extraordinary performance from Jessica Chastain and all credit to the make up ageing effects.

Chastain DESTROYS with a genuine transformation. Garfield is grand as well. It's still a string-pulling biopic, but slightly more ambivalent about its subject than the typical Hollywood fare.
