The Execution of Mary Stuart

1895
Horror
Short Film
1m
A short film depicting the execution of Mary, Queen of the Scots. Mary is brought to the execution block and made to kneel down with her neck over it. The executioner lifts his axe ready to bring it down. After that frame Mary has been replaced by a dummy. The axe comes down and severs the head of the dummy from the body. The executioner picks up the head and shows it around for everyone else to see. One of the first 'camera tricks' to be used in a movie. (imdb)

Very impressive, because one can see that people fairly early understood that moving pictures can be manipulated and that the world in this film is only what you see and NOT necessarily what actually happened (in this case that dummy replaced the actress).

Shock cinema, better then most of the time due to its morbidity.

Ha, I bet this was the equivalent of Hostel to people in the 1890s.

The grain of the footage really made that a nice jump cut.

So the first horror movie is an exploitation film. Historically interesting and, given the release date, technically impressive. It's only a minute long but it's fun to rewatch just to pinpoint the jump cut.

One of the first, if not the first, exploitation films. Interestingly, like many would later do, it tries to pretend it is teaching an important message as a historical film.

Early example of an editing technique... very nice jump cut, not particularly noticeable.
