Adapted from Michael Ondaatje's acclaimed novel set against the backdrop of World War II, Anthony Mingehlla's Oscar-winning drama stars Ralph Fiennes as a horribly burned pilot who recounts a tale of doomed romance to the nurse tending him (Juliette Binoche). A love letter to a bygone Hollywood era where overly melodramatic romance was more readily digestible. I always appreciate ambitious films, but this bit off more than it could chew. All of the story that occurred after the plane crash was a total bore and felt like an unnecessary framing device, but still took up about half of the screen time. I'm sure it worked well for the book, but not for this movie.

an interesting film with thematic depth - brought up some really thought-provoking issues about the nature of war, patriotism and identity. the romance aspect of it just didn't get through to me, though - i didn't particularly feel for ralph fiennes or kristin scott thomas (or their adulterous relationship) and felt the subplot with juliette bionche was too light and secondary in nature. in all, none of the characters were given enough time or dimension to really take hold of our sympathies

Dull wartime drama with pretty but uninspiring cinematography, unbearably bland characters and stiff performances. Fiennes is a vortex of charisma, so lacking in personality that he sucks the life out of everyone around him. His romance with Thomas feels absolutely passionless, and written by someone who doesn't quite understand humans. The best parts of the film involve Binoche, and her scenes with Andrews are especially intriguing. What a shame the film isn't more focused on their characters.

Old fashioned romantic epic is a bit of a lumpy brew, suffering from an identity crisis between melodramatic romance, and a more weighty consideration of wartime morality and betrayal. Ultimately rests on the more superficial romantic angle, resulting in a soap opera writ (incredibly) large; not helped by Fiennes and Thomas, who deliver fine performances but fail to convince on their passionate connection. Still attractively crafted and shot, and a pleasant enough experience.

A concoction of bloated ambition, talented performers, doomed romance, period recreation, exotic locales, and malformed makeup which seems to almost guarantee two outcomes: a swathe of Oscars and an utterly dull and generic film.

I watched this for almost three hours and still know nothing about any of these characters. In the back of my head, I could hear "I hate sand. It's coarse, rough, and it gets everywhere. Unlike you. You're British, or something." Seriously, give me Sack Lunch any day of the week. Whether the family shrunk or it's a giant sack is ten times the mystery in this movie, which is "why the hell should I care?"

Minghella felt like a director out of his time. He would've done better a few decades earlier with his deliberate pacing and classical presentation and savoury cinematic eye. The English Patient is probably his best work. Everything is polished, the script is strong, the actors even stronger, but in the end there's a stillness - a coldness. It's supposed to be one of the biggest tearjerkers of all time, but I really didn't feel that much.

I might be a BIT hesitant to give it a Best Picture, but I felt The English Patient still deserves some of the accolades it got. Ralph Fiennes does an amazing job as the titular character, and the WWII backdrop is interesting and engaging.

It is no doubt well made and it looks beautiful but I don't know if you can justify spending this much time on it. I suspect the book is better, in fact I feel the same way about every Minghella movie, even the ones I liked. The movie really needed more Willem Dafoe, his scenes were extremely more interesting then the love story or anything to do with Binoche.

When I first saw this film I loved it. It was haunting and poetic and full of great, lasting images and a sense of longing, always longing for something just out of reach. Not sure I would feel the same way seeing it again, but still. "I am writing to you in the dark" --just lovely.

Etkileyici bir film. The Age of Innocence gibi, The Remains of the Day gibi yavaş akan ama duyguları insanın içine işleyerek ilerleyen bir yönü var. Basit bir hikaye ama müzikleriyle, sahneleriyle, oyunculuklarıyla görkemli bir hale gelmiş. Tüm karakterlerimizin bir arayışı var filmde. Merkezindeki yasak, tutkulu aşk işlenişiyle bağlıyor ekrana. Filmi hissetmezseniz 160 dakika oldukça sıkıcı gelir, hissedince her anı güzel. Ajitasyon yapmadan duyguyu verebilen filmler takdiri hakediyor.

A pretty well done but overlong Oscarbait romance that doesn't justify its run time despite a pretty strong cast (of varying effectiveness) and pretty photography. Feels way behind its time, reminding me more of stuff like Out of Africa and many movies far before that. It's not a terrible film, but shouldn't have been Best Picture.

I don't buy the chemistry in the lead love story or find the characters sympathetic. Seeing as how so much of the movie hinges on that drama, it just doesn't do much for me. Secondary stories were more interesting. A few solid scenes here and there make for a decent production, but overall I found it poorly edited and bloated. 1996 was a weak year in film, but Fargo should have won Best Picture and this should have faded to obscurity.

Everything is pretty good without it ever really getting to greatness. It's quite melodramatic which isn't shocking considering it's a romance. I'm not convinced. The flashback "love" story is particularly weak being more about lust than any genuine connection, asking us to find an unjustified affair between two bland characters romantic, being poorly observed and with the affair feeling passionless in part due to a performance from Fiennes where he looks bored most of the time. The scenes set around Juliette Binoche's character are quite a lot better and could have made for a pretty good film if not for all that other stuff...

Suffocating at 155', "The English Patient" is your typical, Oscar-bait, WII romantic drama that doesn't pay off until the final scenes. Still, it's a perfectly respectable effort for Minghella, who does a solid job both as a director and as a screenwriter, while the best aspect of it is undoubtedly the very fine acting. Binoche stands out as the liveliest presence, but Scott Thomas and Fiennes are also strong in the leads. Just wish the film was overall as powerful as its last half hour.

It took me years to finally watch The English Patient for reasons of thinking it was a sappy over wrought love drama; I was completely mistaken. The English Patient takes the existing formula laid out by classic period romances and nearly perfects every aspect. A tightly crafted story with layers upon layers of depth makes all of the very interesting characters all the more believable and impactful. Fiennes, in particular, is at the top of his game here; it's a shame he didn't win the Oscar.

The incredible physical chemistry & sexual heat between the two elegant, refined blondes ( Ralph Fiennes & Kristin Scott Thomas) is what drives this glorious love story. Juliette Binoche is luminous here.
