A gorgeously atmospheric and tightly structured ghost story—anything would be enchanting with such sets and lighting. The poetic first meeting is really lovely; I am slightly disappointed things are never quite as emotional after that, but it's still a wonderfully aesthetic tale of the uncanny. I am perhaps a bit spoiled having seen and loved A Chinese Ghost Story so long before (besides large doses of 80s action and humor, it's much better at romance); but seeing it in classic form is nice too.
