The Elephant in the Living Room takes viewers on a journey deep inside the controversial American subculture of raising the most dangerous animals in the world, as common household pets. Set against the backdrop of a heated national debate, director Michael Webber chronicles the extraordinary story of two men at the heart of the issue - Tim Harrison, an Ohio police officer whose friend was killed by an exotic pet; and Terry Brumfield, a big-hearted man who struggles to raise two African lions. Keeping exotic animals is absolutely ridiculous and so goddamn stupid. Pretty infuriating documentary; seeing wild animals in a small enclosure. Those animals need space, not a tiny cage. Argh. And who the fuck buys an aligator or a snake for their child? How fucking ignorant can you be?

Riveting doc that attempts to treat both sides of the exotic-pets-as-animals issue with an even hand, although ultimately (and probably rightfully) falls more toward one than the other.

This came out prior to Joe Exotic, and prior even to the incident in Ohio where a man let loose a bunch of lions, tigers, and panthers. Pretty fascinating when I watched when it came out, although it may be dated enough at this point to be of less value

Webber admirably attempts to examine both sides of the issue with keeping exotic pets. But even he cannot change the fact that beyond the tears, the tragic stories and the statements of love and dedication, the animals serve only to make the humans feel better, not the other way around. It is not as satisfyingly aggressive as some of the more biased docs on the subject - but one particular home video scene will linger long after the movie is over.
