The Eiger Sanction

If you want to see Clint Eastwood as James Bond but mostly jogging and climbing, this is the bizarre but charming movie to watch. The ridiculous parts don't mesh well with earnest attempts to put realistic mountain climbing on film.

I feel like I just watched 2 hours of Clint Eastwood's vacation videos. Yes, it's that exciting.

"Sometimes people do things they thought they'd never do again. Like rape, for instance. Yeah. I thought I'd given up rape, but I think I've changed my mind." This has got to be Eastwood's most memorable line ever, but somehow it's not. I wonder why...

An albino criminal mastermind and a poofter rival assassin annoy a retired assissin/art teacher/mountain climber. It really sounds like a spoof when you describe it (and apparently Trevanian intended it to be), but I'll be damned if I had any idea that this was supposed to be one.

The movie is dated and parts of it feel like a James Bond ripoff but overall it is an enjoyable experience. Clint Eastwood has fun in the lead role and George Kennedy gives a good supporting performance. The mountain scenery is exquisite in the film.

Clint Eastwood as an assassin. Production quality not so good. Otherwise, interesting.

Somewhere between James Bond & Indiana Jones, though not so action-packed. Mountains make nice scenery.

Did not age well, but as well as a Yorkshire terrier named 'Faggot' it did include some epic climbing and mountain photography. Clint Eastwood doing his own stunts is badass. 'We're gonna make it.' 'I don't think so, but we'll continue with style.'

Viewed February 9, 2018. The Eiger Sanction is Eastwood's most rampantly insensitive movie. I'm not sure that it ever has the intelligence to make up for the limits of its material, or the toxicity of its point of view

Watched probably 10-15 years ago and don't remember a whole lot (not a good sign). After re-watching trailer to jog memory, the film came back to me as being pretty decent for the time it's made. Eastwood is quite good in this action/thriller, which is filmed well.

The rape jokes haven't aged well.

Absurdly witty dialogue made it somewhat entertaining but otherwise, not much to applaud.

I guess Eastwood had to make a few of these before he could turn a self-critical eye on the genre.

i like eastwood, but i hate thrillers that aren't thrilling. the poster and dialogue throughout imply that the climbing expedition is going to be a BIG DEAL but the movie is very casual about getting there and no one sets foot on the mountain until 90 intrigue-less minutes in. by this time i was checking the clock every ten minutes to see when it would end. I bet the novel was interesting, but this film certainly wasn't. the ending could have been great but the excitement by then was botched.

A flabby-paced plot with ham-fisted dialogue fleetingly redeemed by superbly filmed mountaineering scenes, take it with a grain of salt: Everything immoderate, show-offy and offensive about early Clint actioners is redeemed with utmost taste and maturity in his more recent work.

Stupendous, unbelievable film -- and that's not just the mountain climbing sequences, but the mountain of non-P.C. sexism, racism and homophobia on display, though Eastwood's trademark weary, bemused delivery does much to defuse the impact. Story as it is is reasonably gripping, and the climactic mountain climbing sequences (replete with reminders that it is really Clint up there) are nail-biting stuff.

The film works best when it needs to most, during the thirty minute Eiger climbing sequence, but the rest of the movie is a mess of terrible cliche, sloppy cinematography, and cringe-worthy racial and sexual politics.

If all our secret missions are executed this stupidly it's no wonder our foreign relations are so bad. The script's pretty terrible and overly long. There's some weird bits sprinkled throughout in what I guess is a sad attempt at being hip but just comes off as forced. There's also zero suspense because everyone knows nothing bad happens to Clint Eastwood. Easily his worst film.

I've just always liked this movie... Of course, I was 13/14 at the time it came out... Simultaneously sexy, (some gorgeous and exotic women), quirky, kitschy, but also, tense and suspenseful... It proves to be quite an interesting 'time capsule' of the '70's, too... Enjoy!

Somehow it makes spies and assassins incredibly boring.

Clint motherfucking Eastwood, the Eiger Nordwand, spys, assassins, ice climbing, titties and a dog named Faggot. What more do you want?

A movie from my youth and not seen for years. I still remember his "guide" racing ahead and then the look on his face when he realized she wasn't waiting around.

The climax makes the movie somewhat watchable, but that doesn't change the fact that it's really sexist.

The Eiger Sanction is fine for a couple of mindless hours of entertainment, but really should have been much better given the talent involved.

Pretty good thriller about a hitman.
