On their wedding night Bob informs his new bride Betty that he has bought a chicken farm. An abandoned chicken farm, to be exact, which is obvious when the two move in. Betty endures Bob's enthusiasm for the rural life, rustic inconveniences, and battling nature, but her patience is severely tested when glamorous neighbor Harriet Putnam seems to set her sights on Bob. Look no further than here for the basis of the 1960's TV series GREEN ACRES. The plot is exactly the same, with city-folks MacMurray and Colbert moving to the country, bringing with them pre-conceived notions of a bucolic life and instead finding themselves well over their heads almost immediately. Congenial comedy introduces Ma and Pa Kettle to the screen; two years later they starred in their own feature, which led to the series.

Mediocre romantic comedy that way too long even if its mildly entertaining. The Kettles are the best part so its no surprise that they got their own series.

Must have been to the 1947 audience what Funny Farm (1988) was for me. Wonderfully silly 'farming for idiots' scenario with a ton of laughs. Got to say, Claudette Colbert's character took the change of environment comically great. Got to give her credit too, she was quite good at the slapstick, being really on form for this box office success. Not surprising, as Colbert was always great with Fred MacMurray. So yeah, I enjoyed my time with The Egg and I (1947).
