"Never feels philosophically uncommitted, nor does it scan as neo-colonialist exploitation." - Ed Gonzalez

Angelopoulos' 'swansong' plays like a remix of all his previous films made by a less experienced director. The stellar cast mostly turn in flat performances, and while there is a greater variety of shots than usual for Angelopoulos, they are not particularly complex or interesting and seem more like products of affectation rather than inspiration. But what it really lacks is a sense of thematic and emotional clarity, qualities present in all of his previous work. Disappointing.
