If the film lacks one thing, it's a strong sense of forward momentum. The character interactions exude a healthy dose of palpable tension, allowing each scene to work fine on its own, yet it takes a heck of a lot of time for them to coalesce into a meaningful whole. Regardless, it packs enough of a punch to warrant a viewing.

A touch on the slow side, but interesting enough. The performances were impressive; Hardy in particular does very well with an understated but challenging role. If the content feels a bit thin, the resolution, subtle as it is, is worth sticking around for. Decent.

The Drop is a movie that sets a strong stage, gives us the most basic of a plot, and then lets its characters have at it. They go about their business, we follow them, it all seems tense but otherwise pretty low-key, and then the violence hits and we're all left shocked. That's the formula it uses and it does it well. It's got great acting, strong writing, and it's very entertaining for most of its running time, even if it doesn't have quite enough content for a film running over 100 minutes.

Intensely gripping crime drama, which can be largely attributed to two factors, Lehane's writing, and Hardy's acting, both of which blew it out of the park. Hardy's portrayal of Bob could have been simple and boring, but he made the man so mystifying-ly interesting that I could not help but love every minute of this movie. It might not have made a splash when it came out, but "The Drop" was one hell of a piece of cinema.

Extra points for introducing us to this understated character who can take care of business. Tom Hardy gives an exceptional performance as a tough guy that nobody sees coming. He seeks no praise or glory for doing his job. He wants a life of his own, and understands the rules of the game. Noomi Rapace was also good. James Gandolfini also gives a good performance as the insider who plans the mob robberies. This is a slow burn, and breaks some common conventions of violent mob portrayals.

The Drop is one of the unsung gems of 2014. This is a slow burning, character driven crime drama that boasts a stellar screenplay and compelling performances. Tom Hardy gives a mysterious and understated 'Brando-esque' performance. And in his final role the late, great, James Gandolfini gives a fitting masterclass. Compared to the glitz, glamour and glorification of most crime dramas, the understated realism of The Drop evokes grounded story telling, seedy characters and a brooding atmosphere.

I like the poster and Gandolfini's (last) performance. But I don't like Noomi Rapace and that I could sense that this is a short story stretched to a feature length script.

THE most satisfying movie I saw in all of 2014. Hardy and Gandolfini create lives just out of their postures, or the way they sigh or raise their eyebrows. The violence is realistic, neither flashy nor ostentatiously gritty, growing naturally out of the world these people inhabit and the choices they make within it. It's ultimately upbeat, even life-affirming. And the great twist that sells it at the end isn't a cheap, plot-based one, but one that grows out of character. It made me cheer.

Tom Hardy diablement efficace, et très impressionnant dans un rôle viril, qui lui va comme un gant. Excellente ambiance, faite de rebondissements imprévisibles, de suspense, et de romance avec Noomi Rapace.

I'm going to guess that what kept this from being successful was that in order to hide the ultimate reveal, the first hour often has characters behaving in ways that seem weird/ implausible. For instance, the fact that the mob guys expected the bar guys to find the thieves & get their money back seemed bizarre to me. Isn't hunting & punishing the one thing mobsters do best? But as the film progresses (carried by EXCELLENT performances) it makes more & more sense & that reveal was worth the wait

It's a slow movie with a lot of dialogue and not much action most of the time, and that is why it worked so well. It spends time building up a cast of characters that are memorable and that you grow to care about. Then there's the addition of worrying over something happening to that lil' puppy of a dog, all the time. A very stellar cast with performances that are subdued and yet incredibly strong, I very much enjoyed this crime thriller. The cast really holds it together whenever it stumbles.

Admittedly,at times, the pacing may be a problem, but The Drop is more concerned with its expertly crafted elevation of tension. Hardy's subdued performance is worth the slow burn as the payoff is cheer-worthy. With just over a 100 minute running time, this left me wanting a bit more.

James Gandolfini does the Tony Soprano accent in this so this is now what I imagine happened to him if he went into witness protection and was a complete moron. Tom Hardy does possibly the worst New York accent I've ever heard. It was an ok movie but the pace is a bit off and it takes forever to get to a really good ending. I think casting someone a little less brooding than Tom Hardy would've made it better as you never felt any danger for his life as he's such an animal.

A strongly written script that Roskam has made in to an atmospheric, dark and low-key crime. The strong performances progresses this story forward as the character takes center stage, Hardy is again very captivating but so is Matthias as Eric. A tragic figure which is both scary and destructive but also someone that is quite aware that he is going insane and everything is slipping away from him.

I tend to enjoy this type of low-profile crime flick, and The Drop was no exception. Cool cast, relatively low stakes, some intimidating/flawed characters.. Works for me! But the only real surprise here is Hardy giving a neat performance as a seemingly simple schlub. Everything else is more of the same-ish.

A cold-hearted film about rough life in Brooklyn. James Gandolfini does not disappoint in his performance as a washed-up gangster. The surprise in this film is Tom Hardy's ability to play a subdued role. His lines are spoken almost without being noticed - and as the lead role, this quietness sets the tone for the film. The script has a few twists worth remembering, but most of the what the film says about life in crime-filled neighborhoods has been said before.

A bit better than Bullhead, but Roskam's ceremonial tone truly matches Lehane's script/short story, in a way that resembles Clint's masterpiece Mystic River. The Drop, however, stumbles upon characters that are only part of atmosphere, they never feel enough organic to make us care about them. The film never actually begins or ends. It just punches, not always hitting the mark.

Slow paced and gritty crime drama. Hardy is outstanding as usual. Based on a short story by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the screenplay. And there's a novel called The Drop available too, which seems to be an extended version of the original short story (correct me if I'm wrong).

Strong performances in an otherwise mediocre film. Tom Hardy stands out and is both a great and a poor choice for the role, as he does a great job selling us on being a non-Hardy like character which eventually comes back to being a typical Hardy character.

Builds a great mood, a really intriguing blend of Stephen King suburbia and Nordic noir. It's not perfect, but I found myself really intrigued by the turns the story took, and Hardy and Gandolfini both do great, subtle work.

Decent. The acting is okay, with Gandolfini being the most impressive, and the story is interesting enough to keep up with, but not terribly exciting or enthralling to remember it. The contrast between the two stories, one about the missing mob money, another about Tom Hardy learning to take care of a dog, work well for developing his character arc and his relation with Rapace's character. Still, it's overall just decent, but not a bad way to spend two hours.

I don't know if it's just me, but I found this movie to be tedious and pointless. There's barely any pacing to speak of, simply because fuck all happens. Especially the first half, where a semi-decent crime story seems to be set up, only to be interrupted by countless and endless scenes involving a girl and a dog, boggles my mind. Hardy truly does a great job with what got handed to him, but his character can only be described as empty and lifeless. Actually, make that the whole movie.

An excellent crime film, tense and absorbing. Tom Hardy gives a memorable performance, full of reserves of tenderness and violence, and Gandolfini shines in his last role as a two-bit hood fantasizing about being--once, almost--Tony Soprano. In fact, all the performances are good--Schoenaerts, Rapace, and Michael Aronov in particular. Roskam still has to learn how to tell a story, but he is gifted at creating atmosphere, realizing character, and generating interest and suspense.

Slow-paced but expertly written, it has an awesome narrative. Hardy was incredible in this in the same way Rocky worked, with his simplistic outlook (though this goes in interesting directions later) on life, and Gandolfini did a great job too. When the violence happens it is intense like violence should be, and everything just works really well.

Paradoxal because this film is utterly slow at moments and yet it never ceases to grab and hold your attention. The plot isn't overly dramatical or violent but the story is solid, the atmosphere is just right and the roles are brought to perfection, which makes this an enjoyable, even recommended watch.

I kept remarking on how good this screenplay was, but when the credits rolled and I saw Dennis Lehane's name, it all made sense. Here's another tense, mysterious thriller from the man, with solid direction to boot, that lets the characters drive the story. Hardy is borderline brilliant as the dim, sweet, unassuming bartender. Structurally the film can waver on transparency (heavy musical cues, scenes ending mid-moment for the mystery's sake), but it works because of how strong it is narratively.

This is such a slow burner. The payoff is interesting but it doesn't come soon enough. The real reason to see this movie is because of Tom Hardy. He's phenomenal in this film. James Gandolfini also does swimmingly in familiar waters. To me though it was just missing that extra oomph. Not exactly sure what they should have done differently, but overall I just didn't fall in love with it. Still if you're a fan of slow burning character studies then this is definitely worth seeing.

Watch til you drop. I liked this movie quite a bit, it really keeps you in the dark for a long time and you just don't see some things coming. This was a pretty good film for James Gandolfini to go out on. It won't win a bunch of awards, but it's a crime-drama that is enjoyable. Gandolfini can do crime well from his Sopranos days. Bob (Tom Hardy) tends Marv's bar and hides the Mob's money. Marv (James Gandolfini) wants to take the money and run. Bob just wants to take care of his new dog and build a relationship with Nadia (Noomi Rapace). Things grow complicated. Dennis Lehane expanded his short story with mixed results; the character drama is effective, but the crime drama is mostly rote, and the focus is often hazy. Still, the direction is good, and the performances (including Gandolfini's last) are mostly strong.

Gritty, dramatic and full of realism. Tom Hardy is on the top of his game, portraying the silent and secretive lead character of Bob Saginowski. Lehane wrote a crafty screenplay, with enough light hearted moments and enough twists to keep you focused. Story slow at times, but not terribly so, and patience is rewarded when everything gels perfectly at the end. The excellent portrayals probably belong more to the casting director than the actors themselves since they're all pretty much in typical character.
