What a bore, that door in the floor. Wish 'twas no more, that door in the floor. I abhor, you door in the floor. Door in the floor, no more. Wherefore, that door in the floor. Why a door in the floor? Wish was no more, that door in the floor. No more, you door in the floor, no more. ---Edgar Allen Poe, as read by Dr Seuss, as channeled by Spleen

Bridges' manipulator's sense of entitlement does score some scattered laughs, but film is overwhelmingly a wallow in the contagious pain of a couple who've lost 2sons.Offering no answers or meaning 2 difficult questions the viewer's usually as miserable as they r.There's clever commentary on the pretentiousness of Art, but, the film is still filled w/ symbolic metaphors that may or may not be fraught w/ meaning, making it seem like little more than beautifully shot New Yorker magazine fiction.

Jeff Bridges' excellent performance compensates for some tonal iconsistencies.

Quietly searing and painful character study of grim and unpleasant characters is (pardon the metaphor) like watching an emotional car wreck gradually come into focus; both Bridges and Basinger are in superb form and keep their ugly characters watchable and at least understandable, but their “George-and-Martha” gone bitter and acrimonious dynamic makes the film tough going, especially as they relate to Foster’s bland and underwritten audience surrogate. Fascinating but not necessarily enjoyable.

An intriguing blend of melodrama and intrigue, juggles a considerable array of tones and plot points well but never becomes more than the sum of its parts. Great Jeff Bridges performance, though.

In this film a writer critiques a beginning writer's work by saying: "It's real but uninteresting." That statement really rings true for this film. Well not so much the real part, but definitely the uninteresting.

Very slow start, but not bad at all really.

A movie so bad it could only have come from a John Irving novel.

Lots of sexual tention on each character in this story (even on Bijou Phillips who was only in some scenes), but somehow I did not buy it. Prob. more interesting to read the book by Irving.

Can not be great, but even with the characteristic of being cliche, makes no be despicable. It is a solid drama, with good interpretations, script and direction.

Hmm. A tough one to rate. A film that has no idea what it wants to be. Eddie is a frustrating and poorly realized character. Jeff Bridges acts circles around everyone else. The story and mood of the film are strange. In a bad way. And yet it was still pretty interesting.

"We bet you'd ENJOY it." .... Dead wrong, Criticker. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind when I watched this or maybe I just didn't enjoy seeing Jeff Bridges naked ass. Either way, this movie was boring and didn't entertain me at all. One of the few movies that is worse than "Napoleon Dynamite."

Another great performance from Jeff Bridges. His character here is so wild and unpredictable, but at the same time cunning and vindictive. What's most interesting about this film is the way it balances between drama and humor quite effectively. Not an easy thing to do.

Odd but extremely intriguing film about love, youth and motherhood. My only real gripe is that they would have been well advised to use more implied situations instead of lots of gratuitous nudity to get their point across. Still, very thought-provoking movie and I love the ending.

Jeff bridges was robbed of an Oscar for this one. Sophomore director Todd Williams adapted the John Irving novel A Widow for One Year (a terrific read). Excellent movie captures the high-end world of the Hamptons in the summer, the dynamics of a family grieving the loss of two twin boys. Sexy, even raunchy, very funny, utterly tragic. It has a bit of Summer of 42 feel to it, but smarter and hilarious and sadder, all at once.

Awkward tonal shifts abound, this film experiences some major identity problems. I didn't even find much in the film's much-acclaimed performances (although credit must be given to Basinger in that she pulls off a character that makes absolutely no sense on paper).

It's a somber, poetic piece, reminiscent in tone and pace to 2003's Blue Car -- reflecting, doleful, and disconsolate. For those in the mood for this kind of tale, it's a well-acted and absorbing piece of dramatic fiction, which is the least you would expect from an Irving adaptation.
