The Disappointments Room

I belonged in that theater about as much as that blonde dye belonged on Kate Beckinsale's head. I was moved by this film exactly as much as Kate Beckinsale's upper lip moved throughout the film.

It's not good, but not bad enough to hate. Pull out the most generic elements of every "family with issues moves into a spooky, haunted house" film and make that, without anything unique, scary, or surprising. Every time the story almost throws in something possibly interesting, it goes nowhere. Protective talking ghost cat? Never mind. Possible love triangle? Haunted paintings? Strange museum curator who hunts ghosts? Never mind. Had some promise, but it never gets good. Then it just ends

How I would describe The Disappointments Room is right in the name. The incoherent mess of a plot and weird, unanswered questions add up, and when combined with the genre-defying bad acting, specifically from the Sam Rockwell wanna-be, the Disappointments Room ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy.

Asian horror "à la USA". I don't like Asian Horror films but this one is watchable.

Beyond lazy. This is barely a movie.

kate beckinsale is great

The beautiful Kate Beckinsale is the highlight of this movie. Nice creepy atmosphere. Acting was good. Good music. The writer & director spent their budget conjuring horror from her imagination but manage only to provide a rather unsatisfying collection of dream scenes and flashbacks to tell this rather unremarkable story. There were many missed opportunities to be better.

The concept and setup are terrific, and there are even a couple clever moments thrown in there for good measure. Somewhere along the path, however, the movie loses its way and devolves into an aimless mess full of loose threads and a deeply unsatisfying conclusion.

The Disappointments Room does lather on some creepy atmospherics: the dark, sprawling mansion, the lurking dog, the uncertainty over Dana's own sanity. But the story goes awry with both its plotting and problematic content. The makers try to do too much and wind up doing it all pretty poorly, then pile on the gore and a strange sexual tangent in the hopes that the audience might not notice. (pluggedin.com)
