The Dilemma
2011
Comedy, Drama
1h 51m
Ron Howard serves up a delicious comedy about two best friends and business partners -- Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) -- who are about to land a fantastic deal when Ronny learns something about Nick's wife, Geneva (Winona Ryder), that rocks his world. Ronny turns amateur sleuth to determine whether Geneva's cheating on Nick and learns that telling a friend the truth is even more difficult than concealing it.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Although this was supposedly a comedy I felt like I was watching it in a library since there wasn't a peep from the audience (minus one person's sneezing fit). The "dilemma" with this movie is trying to find a likable character in it or to just smile during any portion of it. The fact that my date and I did not leave the film is the only thing that saved this from getting a score below Blackjack. Vinve Vaughn is all grows up, and sucks.

After hours and hours of thought on what I could possibly say to capture my feelings after watching this film, I finally came up with the perfect phrase: Boring as fuck.

Maybe the most boring movie i've seen this year. An obviously great cast turns out to be pointless and stereotypically uninspiring. One of those movies you will forget very fast!

I watched this film recently. Very recently. I don't remember anything about it. Vince Vaughn has trouble making decent films. Kevin James hasn't been in a single decent film. And the premise that a guy like Kevin James can nail a chick like Winona Ryder? Yeah, right. So the believable stint in this film is that Ryder would cheat on James, and I can buy that. But seriously, there's no reason to ever watch this movie.

I'm pretty happy with the way that whole gambling addict thing plays out, but other than that, this is a pretty lack-luster movie. Give it a miss unless you can't not watch something with either Vaughn or James, although I have no idea why anyone would like Kevin James that much.

It's not awful, but it's pretty much the same as every other movie Vince Vaughn has made but with slightly more chick-flick vibe. There are only a couple of scenes with any comedic value and the story is very run-of-the-mill, but if you're the type that continues going to see every Vince Vaughn movie and still likes them, then you'll probably enjoy this.

Such a serious topic but, like several characters point out in the movie, handled in a very bad way. It's obviously no comedy because of the subject matter and they didn't want to make a real drama so the movie is doomed to sit between two chairs and even if the movie had decided what it wanted to be it wouldn't be too successful in its intent.

Vaughn never seems to stop moving his lips, but never bothers to buckle down and say something easy that would prevent a whole lot of shenanigans until he looks like a perverted maniac? Channing Tatum, in his most spectacular performance ever, moves viewers by mourning his fish.

Replace this with a 'buddy' film featuring Vince Vaughn and Channing Tatum, with Queen Latifah as their foil, and you have a worthy dramedy. As it is, it is mainly lows punctuated with too few highs (the 'Deep Throat' reference, the wedding anniversary toast, the showdown between Ronny and Zip).

Fails to make anything particularly worthwhile out of an okay premise and a generally talented cast, but as far as Kevin James movies go this is far from the worst.

The Dilemma had a few laughs, an amazing cast, but the whole thing coalesced into a boring movie. I can usually enjoy a bad comedy if it makes me laugh. I don't really need it to have the best plot if it has some good comedy. One would think that all of the great actors Ryder, Latifah (who is criminally under utilized and is given the worst script), Connelly, James, Tatum, and Vaughn would be able to make this into something interesting. It shows what a shit script can do to good people.

Wow this really sucked. The characters suck, the dilemma is made up bullshit that could be solved in a second, the writing is lame, the humor is subpar even for a bad comedy... ugh, save yourself some time and avoid watching this.

Not as dire as I was expecting, but it does have a lot of problems. I liked Vaughan actually working through the dilemma itself, and figuring out what he should do, though Howard doesn't do much with it cinematically. I actually thought that he'd started being affected psychologically by the poisonous plants he fell into, and was disappointed that that never paid off. I think the movie works better if you assume that's what's causing him to act crazy.

The Dilemma reads like a movie that's trying to make audiences think. But about what, exactly? In real life, telling the truth can simultaneously hurt and heal. But it's always what we're supposed to do. Onscreen, Ronny even tries to tell it in love. So truth-telling is the one message that stands out when the credits start to roll. (pluggedin.com)

I felt almost as uncomfortable watching this movie as I did Vince Vaughn's other relationship movie, "The Break-up." I understand the dilemma, but really, if my best friend were in that position, my decision would be really easy to make. Kevin James is great in it, but there was no chemistry with Winona Ryder. The only great thing about this movie were the scenes involving Channing Tatum--they were so absurd, they were genuinely funny. Everything else was blah.

This was an attempt at a meaningful Edward-Burns-ian drama without the neccessary gravity to complete. Most of the dramatic scenes were weak and some where just embarrassing to the actors.

Here is the thing. I like Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, like in interviews, just being themselves they are pretty funny guys. How they can get almost none of that to translate in this film is a bit of an achievement in itself.

Sometimes films are just overcomplicated. Sure, there IS a dilemma at the center of a film titled "The Dilemma" but it is not one that warrants the ludicrous difficulties that arise in the plot of this film. It's not a terrible film, I expected worse, but I just thought the overall plot was simultaneously simple and ludicrous.

Vince Vaughn and Winona Ryder worked really well together, their level of antagonism and negative chemistry was goddamn scary at times, and the sleazy dude Winona was sleeping with was certainly sleazy, but the movie never gets dark enough to capitalize. Ever. Never. It promises to be a really creepy and suspenseful black comedy but turns out to be a fucking bromance movie. Shit, man, Vince Vaughn did Swingers but he also did Psycho. Not everything he does needs to be some hack frat boy comedy.

For a guy who is pretty funny, Vaughn has problems making good movies. Right before my brother fell asleep he said this shouldnt be a Dilemma, and maybe the title refers to my dilemma as to whether I should continue watching this. "Hey Kevin James, your wife is cheating on you." The End.

Went into this with expectations simply as low as they could possibly be (particuarly taking into consideration Vaughn and James' recent outings!), and perhaps that explains my generally positive reception and score. It bumbles along quite nicely with a few laughs here and there and some okay performances. While that might not exactly sound great, "The Dilemma" none-the-less proves an entertaining, if low key, comedy/drama.

Finding out that the best friend's wife is an adultress hardly seems like fertile ground for a comedy, yet at the same time comedy is defined often as tragedy befalling a person you care little for. Thankfully, the story allows occasional dramatic moments as the Vaugn's character digests the invisible degeneration of his friend's life. The problem lies in finding any humor in the proceedings, where aside from the occasional slip and fall, there is little effort made and opportunity wasted.

Does anybody else remember when it was spelled DilemNA? ...Anyway: It's the women that make this film a 'cut above'; Connelly and Ryder... And, Vaughn shows a new level of maturity in his work, that's nice to see, too...
