The Diary of Anne Frank

It is pretty intense.

A prestige project in its day. Stevens gave us some good movies but never had a light touch, and doesn't manage to make this plodding thing feel less than its three hour runtime. There are moments of power and moving work by Schildkraut as Otto Frank, but commits the fatal mistake of casting as Anne a lanky woman in her twenties, and looking it (presumably to make the forced ‘romance' with Peter less squirm-inducing). Worse, Perkins is wooden and lacks Anne's wit and charisma.

George Stevens keeps the 3h running time compelling by alternating very well between character drama, war drama and suspenseful parts. Although Millie Perkins is older than the title characters, she convinces as Anne because she shows the vivacity that makes her so entrancing. In the acting department she is outclassed tho by her older peers. Most impressive of all in this movies is the beautiful cinematography.

Very well assembled, but the idea -a mainstream innocent romance- is painful. And there you have Alfred Newman at his very best. Take it or leave it.

For those who have a heart and really want to understand what it means to be a jew and go in hiding, this is a must for all true-inspiring but yet suffering type of film. Such sadness, but yet hope that all will be well. For many, very few surivors during the period of the Halocaust. Such a sad occasion. Most of thse movies, i do not have the stomach to watch. This film was made where you still have heart and had compassion but in the same time not getting to the point like THE PIANIST where you

Impressive cinematography and the suspenseful moments are done incredibly well (even if they are scarce). However the writing makes this an extremely dull melodrama that goes on far, far too long.

I really ought to find this more frightening and/or touching than I do. Perhaps the problem is that this is the phase of George Stevens's career when he made everything duller

Interesting subject matter, but it does go on quite long.
