A movie director is approached by his old math teacher with a great movie idea: the Devil declares that the Earth is hell. The director rejects the idea, but subsequent events in the life of a writer, a friend of the director's, and a young prostitute he loves seem to prove the math teacher's idea. (imdb)

Bergman's first original script and hooo boy, he wastes no time. (Literally, at 78 minutes.) He basically goes full INLAND EMPIRE on us (on a shoestring budget, in 1949!). The end result is a very mixed bag, that spends a little too much time spelling out its philosophy, but it's never boring.

The first film that is entirely Bergman -- his idea, his writing, his direction. Watching it, I was struck by the various threads that connect it to his other films. As for the film itself, however, it's... not great, but not bad. The story and characters held my interest, and the lighting and cinematography were very dramatic. But there is a palpable air of self-importance to it that is off-putting. Still, for Bergmaniacs, it's definitely worth checking out.

Funny that I'd just seen Hasse Ekman's Flickan från tredje raden (1949) as it was a direct lighter answer to this dark suicidal Ingmar Bergman creation which Ekman also appears in. And there are some wonderfully banal depression packed into this Fängelse [Prison] (1949) of a artists mind. Wouldn't say the tragic nature came together perfectly, but it was fascinating observation. More than anything, I loved that they made a silent slapstick comedy for this!

Meh. What made Bergman films great can only be seen here in glimpses. Every aspect of this film comes across as rather underwhelming (except for the pretty brilliant cinematography). A reasonable and short effort.

Earliest Bergman I've seen is kind of boring, but the acting and cinematography is promising.
