Problem is not the plot-adjacent moral wrangling, which is welcome, but that it is really all for naught: it gets to the same place it would have gotten to anyway, plot all the more rudimentary for it. There is some pretense to complexity of the "If you're not confused, you don't know what's going on" variety, except all that's really going on here is sentimentality and revenge: the IRA's motto in this may as well be "Don't Kill Our Da's". (My sincere apologies if that was an actual IRA motto.)

Naysayers called the plot incoherent, just a lot of moral grappling, not all of which relevant. Funny how they didn't say that about the character of Mike Yanagita in Fargo, for instance. It's as if it was new that emotional associations with the plot could be made by characters whose experiences outside that main plot course it's important we see first-hand with them to grasp their ethical arcs. Long story short, I could only long to be put through more "troubled productions" like this one.

Best enjoyed as a middling star vehicle for Pitt and Ford - they’re both in good form navigating a confused and muddled screenplay, confounded further by Pakula’s 90s tendency to direct as stodgy as porridge. Could have been an interesting thriller about revenge/justice ala PATRIOT GAMES (and scenes from PATRIOT and this have collided in my mind over the years), but Pakula directs with a glum, somber tone which almost seems foolish at times against the superficial material he is dealing with.

This could be something better if it wasn't all contrived around Harrison Ford's good cop embodiment of an uncomplicated moral compass. Despite the Brad Pitt character's insistence that the politics of it all are messy, this film deigns no real consideration for that perspective. It becomes rather boring. A shame, for the first half hour or so I thought this was gonna be a late triumph for Pakula.

Slow and often boring. Worth watching for the high production value the defined these kind of films in the 90’s. Some good action and too much “Big Irish heart” vibe.

pakula atmosfer yaratma konusunda türün piri olsa da tuhaf biçimde filmografisi problemli senaryolar üzerine kurulu. tom'un motivasyon problemi, pitt'in aksanı, hikayenin üzerine kurulduğu ilişkilerin işlemezliği, anlatıda genel olarak şaşan pusula... sadece birkaçı bir filmi izlenemez yapmaya yeterli, ama işte pakula en kötü ihtimalle izletiyor.

This movie is very very slow, and very little things happen and of course has a lot of plot holes that makes it not believable.

Young Julia Stiles was there. And no matter how much Pakula tried to convince it was not an American story, it was. Deep into guts.

An interesting perspective through the view of the terrorist - I almost wanted him to succeed at the end of the movie! Very thought-provoking, despite the stereotypical cop that Harrison played.

Ah, an early Bradley Pitt film, alongside good old aging Harrison. Nothing terribly special, except for dreamy Brad's silly accent.

Everything that's wrong with film. I prefer shitty modern comedies to this Irish piss-taking, confused nonsense. And now it's out on Blu-ray. What the fuckity fuck?
