It says little of what made Rommel become famous as an officer in the field and seems to lack authenticity because it is basically an American viewpoint. There's definitely scope for a more in-depth movie (unless there is another one?). There are a lot of things to like about this movie though; the actors are terrific, some of the war scenes really depict chaos and the depiction of some Nazis as humans rather than insane monsters is to be applauded in a movie made so soon after WWII.

This is not a war movie, it's a biography of Erwin Rommel and it's very well done.

Great war film. Mason is a very convincing Field Marshall Rommel, though english speaking but who cares ? The movie's brilliant and intelligent, even with the use of real footage from WWII. It actually adds something to it. I would definitly recommend it.

Sympathetic portrait of the downfall of Rommel. The best scenes are those portraying the collapse of the North African campaign, early in the film; later, Luther Adler is one of the least convincing Hitlers I have seen, but Mason's polished performance carries it.

Probable the nicest a Nazi officer had been portrayed since the end of the war. Naturally, wanting Hitler dead might have something to do with it. But still Rommel was a ruthless military man, and they don't hide that. A fascinating look into the politics of Nazi warfare and James Mason makes a good presence portraying this stubborn man.
