Chastain exudes lots of charm and confidence despite having acted in only a few films, can't wait to see more of her work and the action is genuinely exciting, at least during the film's first half. The film does hinge heavily on dramatization and the plot's ironic denouement didn't do much for me, but it’s still well made and moderately compelling.

Doesn't really do anything surprising or interesting. It's true that, as another user mentioned, every scene is milked for as much suspense as possible, but it never succeeds in becoming truly thrilling. It's just kind of there. And the characters are about as compelling as its plot.

The film industry needs to realize that Sam Worthington isn't a very good actor. Stop putting him in films, please. The rest of the cast is good. The usually great Christensen has a difficult role to carry. The audience I saw this with seemed to like his performance, one I found lacking in nuance. The subject in mind and a few okay action scenes aside, the film was in general surprisingly unexciting. You can hardly go completely wrong with Wilkinson and Mirren on the cast list, however.

It had some interesting ideas, but the writing isn't good enough to make them count. The good acting belies pitiful main characters. Like in Spielberg's Munich, the agents' professionalism flies out the window the second the tiniest obstacle pops up. Worse, they alternate between overreaction and obliviousness, and manage to forge a soapy love triangle between them even though they're all charmless tightasses. Inexplicably, the Nazi's character is slightly more likable than his hunters.

Better than I thought it would be with quite good performances, some amount of character depth and enough lack of the norm in the narrative to keep it interesting and reasonably though provoking. Spoilt hugely by the ending, however, which would have been far better being cut completely. It turned an interesting take on the consequences of failure and deceit into a "lets make this nice and neat" action thriller which manages to negate the value of the whole plot idea.

Not bad, but suffers from a serious lack of intensity. At no point does this film become truly immersive, which, for a thriller, is a severe shortcoming.

The first half of the movie is greatly better than the second half. The acting by the younger cast of Jessica Chastain and Marton Csokas is noteworthy. Sam Worthington's acting is at par at best. The movie starts of as a good spy thriller but fades towards the end. It would have been better if the ending was different. Overall a decent entertainer.

The younger halves of the cast are great, and that part of the plot follows suit. However, the inclusion of present day drama belittles the first half of the film and makes for a muddled drama. Chastain is great, and much of the film is beautifully shot.

With extrajudicial killings, fallible Mossad agents, and retribution under the guise of justice, The Debt is an intriguing but flawed drama. Despite none of the characters being particularly sympathetic, Chastain, Christensen and Csokas deliver fairly compelling performances that keep the film watchable. The 3rd act of the film, mostly set in the present is the least compelling part, and the resolution is mediocre, rendering the film an average thriller with no deeper theme.

I thought I was the only one confused with the casting on the older versions of the characters, apparently not. I think Ciarán Hinds and Tom Wilkinson should’ve switched roles, looking more like the opposite character. The film has a few well done later scenes, but those alone don’t magically make he rest of the film less dull. Unfortunately it’s a bit disappointing given the people attached to it.

Good spy thriller. Good performances pretty much all the way around, except for Worthington, he was off. Is it just me, or would it make more sense if Wilkinson and Hinds had changed characters? I was entertained throughout. *Good

Operatic, in all the worst ways. What seemed to start life as a not-particularly-clever spy thriller then had all the emotional baggage of the Holocaust piled on top of it. The result: scenes brimming with hysteria and a lot of overwrought "acting". Everything is dialed up to 11--it's exhausting and irritating. Irritating too: all the German dialog with a bunch of obviously-non-native German speakers delivering it. Only David's farewell at the party made me care at all about any of these jerks.

Artistically, John Madden's film scarcely disappoints. The pressing plot, compelling performances and abrupt fits of brutality inundate it with a crushing level of suspense. The Debt has a far advanced intellect and significantly more meaningful characterizations. Many will feel a homecoming to the school of 1970s thrillers such as Three Days of the Condor or Marathon Man.

A great movie about a mission to hunt down a Nazi war criminal. Jessica Chastain steals the show in this movie where she plays the part of a young Mossad agent sent across the border into East Berlin to kidnap this Nazi and put him on trial for his crimes against her people. The acting was excellent and even though their parts were small Helen Mirren, Ciaran Hinds and Tom Wilkinson added their wonderful skills to the movie. The film gets dry at times but it is a very engrossing story.

The way that this movie played out made me think it must be based on a true story. But I've been looking around the internet, and apparently it isn't. But it really feels like one of those "based on a true story" movies, where they're too concerned with keeping the essential facts in there, and thinking that the story alone holds enough weight to carry the movie, when the whole thing is actually pretty underwhelming.

In The Debt, I'll remember one or two of Mirren's facial expressions, a grave close-up of Wilkinson. In some films, this wouldn't be the point. Names like 'Mirren' and 'Wilkinson' would take the backseat to explosives and rambunctious chases. The problem is, The Debt doesn't seem to have much of a point.

I really liked The Debt. I'm a sucker for espionage films that show how being a spy is not "cool." Espionage is dirty. It's dangerous & can be easily corrupted. The story aside, this movie pleased & frustrated me with its casting. Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, & Jesper Christensen were all great in their roles. My problem is with the young/old casting of Marton Csokas/Tom Wilkinson & Sam Worthington/Ciaran Hinds. The physical resemblance between Csokas & Hinds makes it completely confusing.

The Debt lacks most qualities a compelling, interesting or profound thriller should include. Instead it tosses around loose ideals and themes that never blossom or worse, are readily contradicted. Over the lack of direction and confused screenplay is a brilliant performance by Jessica Chastain, who manages to make the offending two hours passable.

Tries to be Fincher but isn't, and Mirren, Hinds and Wilkinson all have very little to do.
Chastain is the best thing in the movie. This--and her fine performance in "The Help"--are so good that I promise to watch anything--excluding superhero movies--that she may do in the future.

One of those movies where you both love and hate a lot. Loved: Mirren, Wilkinson and Chastain and the past story. Hated: Worthington (as usual) and the present story. Overall a great premise, but stumbles upon it's own dramatic structure. Christensen's part is easy forgettable, since he never get's to stand out as the monster he is/was...
