The Deadly Affair

Decent and enjoyable "Le Carré" thriller from the always reliable Lumet. While the movie tries to link the solving of the mystery to the salvation of the protagonist's marriage, it doesn't succeed in that. Making all the bickering with his nymphomaniac wife an distractions from the more entertaining spy stuff.

This winding cold war thriller exemplifies that even Sidney Lumet's minor works tend to be intelligent, unfalteringly directed, and splendidly cast and acted.

Another gem from filmography of Sidney Lumet. A cold-war thriller with a great atmosphere and lots of details that warrant a re-watch. Lumet really makes London look like wet, dirty and cold place. Good cast, and even minor characters like the ones played by Harry Andrews and Simone Signoret are interesting. Kick ass score by Quincy Jones. Biggest fault for me was that there's a pretty big twist that you can see coming from miles away. Makes a great double feature with Tinker Tailor..

The book itself isn't very cinematic, so I can understand some of the changes in this adaptation, but I'm not sure they were for the best. The externalization of some of Charles' issues (only hinted at in the book) are supposed to help the audience identify with him, but it makes for a weak and reactive protagonist, not helped by James Mason's theatrical performance. One of Lumet's lesser works.

Interesting version of a John Carre novel.

Harry Andrews is really great in this.
