The Day the Earth Caught Fire

The sci-fi aspect of this overlooked classic is simple, yet fully effective, but what really sparkles is the delicious dialogue. I should get my hands on the BFI Blu-ray.

Beautiful and intelligent script, good acting, perfect personal stories... a very well shot doomsday movie that is so ahead of its time...

Smartly written, beautifully shot, sensitively acted, and occasionally really sexy.

The matte paintings behind waiting crowds, the Doomsday Mardi Gras parade, the tinted views of London gone silent, all build up to something like a Hawks film twisted in a fever dream, with echoes of Them! and its palpably looming Limit. It hits hard in human scale and makes our current overblown form of disaster flick seem undeniably petty.

Very solid apocalyptic film. The framing of the investigation of a cover up is interesting, as is the actual ordeal faced. The yellow toning is a great choice. Interesting.

The end (potentially?) of the world, but shot at ground level, from a newsroom. I could have used the dialogue slowed down a bit but it is an interesting point of view.

Classic Sci fi definitly worrth a watch.
