The Day of the Beast

So, a Priest, a Metalhead, and a TV Psychic try to summon Satan, right? They commit murders around Madrid trying to find the Antichrist and when they do find him on Christmas Eve like some inverse We Three Kings some proto-Fascist pro-Franco douchebags kill the Beast instead and in the end the Priest throws a sack of shit over his shoulder and walks away like the last Bunuel film. Eh? Get the joke?

This is a very funny Spanish movie which does not try to be politically correct; Alex is a master in that sense. The story is about a good priest who tries to prevent the birth of the beast and in order to encounter the devil he has to be a bad (metal music, stealing, you name it) to do that he has to associate himself with some peculiar characters, if that is not a great original plot I don't know what it is. The movie feels unpolished at times and drags a bit, but definitely a cult movie

This was an absolute riot, and I enjoyed it far more than I expected. There's a likeable verve and energy driven by the directing style that really appealed to me, and the story was rather engaging. Trippy, blackly comical, and very entertaining.

Spanish horror B-movie. Should be five stars based on the plot alone: a priest-turned-sinner joins forces with a shotgun-wielding, acid freak metal head to meet the Devil. It has pretty good pacing and the usual humor that comes with B-movies. The ending felt a little janky/rushed/out of place tho. Blink and you'll miss it. Shout out Easy Rider.

The Day of the Beast is outlandish, trippy and maniacal, and works surprisingly well. The Catholic priest's efforts to pursue evil in an attempt to court The Devil are quite entertaining.

Best movie to watch on Christmas.

the perfect comedy

Thoroughly enjoyable send up of the pretentious morality of the herd versus the more immediate morality of trying to get people to be sane enough to avoid self-destructing. Mocks everything, so it will offend someone in the room (this helps you identify potential stukach). There are also some good metal moments which make you wonder why we did not simply choose death metal as a replacement for our dead cultures.

Heavy!

I was loving it for much of the runtime, but the third act lost me a bit. Still a fun time with great characters, a killer concept, and a surprising amount of slapstick comedy

I'm gonna tell people this was the real Three Amigos. So awesome.

I can't think of specific examples, but this kind of mildly irreverent buddy comedy/horror mashup seems like its been trendy for a while now. Admittedly, in '95 it may have been a trend setter rather than a follower, but either way, at this point it feels a tad stale, like it's ticking boxes for 'what does a horror movie need to appeal to the quirky indie crowd'

Entertaining and enjoyable, but this film lacks the punch needed to get people talking about it afterwards.
