The Day After Halloween

Top badass moment? Given that this is a dull film with few characters that have any redeeming features, I'm going to have to go for Madeline running down her would-be lesbian lover's stalker in his own Mr Whippy ice-cream van. Trust me, it sounds a lot more interesting that it really is, but I guess it beats most chat-up lines. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

This is usually listed as Ozploitation, but there’s quite little Aussie feel to it and it owes more to De Palma. It’s a slow burn with little suspense. Marketing it as “Day After Halloween” was ridiculous, and it’s only a borderline “slasher” at best. It spends a lot of time with our lead in the fashion business and the 1st half works more as a drama. In that way, it reminded me of the director’s “Harlequin” as both cannot decide what they want, and could have been better with a clearer focus.

This Aussie oddity has no business calling itself anything but Snapshot, the most fitting title of its apparent four & that of its blu-ray release. Though it's somewhat dull & slow for most of its runtime, it does have a solid psychological thriller vibe going for it & the performances by Thornton, Contouri & a good supporting cast are enjoyable. The last two minutes do an incredible amount of damage to the story & end things on a confusing note, but overall this is better than I expected.
