Oliver Reed is fantastic, but he doesn't show up for forty minutes! In the meantime we're treated to a rape in one of those remarkable scenes whose effect is unintentionally heightened because of the very censorship meant to lessen it. I wouldn't mess with a human Oliver Reed, but I would consider shaving his back.

Oliver Reed must've been the most intense child to raise. I guess we were just not worthy of an Oliver Reed fueled werewolf franchise from Hammer.

How this didn't spawn its own Hammer series is beyond me. One of their best.

2/3rds of this movie is set-up but that's okay b/c the first hour is probably the best werewolf origin story I've ever seen. It plays like a fairy tale but is so surprisingly dark that it feels like something from Greek myths. The last half hour has the least amount of surprises so it helps that it runs through those more expected story beats. Reed does anguish really well but it might have helped to have the character not be so unceasingly bleak & grim.

Takes a while to get going, but is good fun when it does so. Fisher is a vary capable hand on these Hammer efforts, the setting and sets are easy on the eye, and the usual array of Brit actors bring decent performances. Oliver Reed is worth watching, as usual. This doesn't seem to be regarded as positively as some of the Hammer fare, but it's certainly worth a look. I've always wanted to get roaring drunk in one of the boozers that pop up in these films...

Hammer's entry into the werewolf genre surely has one of the weirdest origins stories in the genre ... and it takes up half the running time. When the werewolf action kicks in, it's pretty solid and Reed is predictably a so;id lead and the werewolf makeup is pretty damn good.

A great take on the werewolf mythos, from the lengthy but captivating introduction to the tense conclusion it never lets up and makes the curse of the werewolf both terrifying and sympathetic. The make up is very well done, not exactly realistic but it manages to stay away from campy. That helps set the film's tone which has a hint of lightness but still plays things straight enough to be effectively chilling when it has to be.

Reed turns in energetic work as a Spanish lycanthrope on the loose in another superior, atmospheric shocker from the Hammer horror crew. A cleavage-driven Romain also impresses as Oliver's hapless mom.

At what point did the idea of a bunch of British guys making a Spanish period piece staring Oliver Reed sound like a good idea? Everything just feels off, despite their best efforts.

The thing I found most compelling about the story was that it was a werewolf origin story that wasn't "Got bitten by preexisting werewolf"

Middling Hammer horror. I liked the lengthy introduction more than the main plot. Reed is always watchable and the makeup is amusing. Some fairly brutal Attack scenes.

The story itself is much better than the film itself. The acting is pretty fun and over the top in the Hammer way. The werewolf itself and how he looks, moves, acts and sounds were a big let down.

Nevar assosciated either Hammer or werewolf films with politics before but here we are. Wikipedia makes the based-on book sound fun so it's a bit of a pity they bastard/liberal-ised it into a simple [gur yhzcra/encr-puvyqera pna arire or "pvivyvfrq"] message. Doubt it'd convert anyone who doesn't like Hammer but it's alright.
