I was hooked by the first half's mysteries. Then Cushing's scientist started to make egregious unscientific jumps in logic & it began to derail. But I was riveted by the second half constantly suggesting that evil is neither monstrous nor alien but commonplace - even in heroic characters like Cushing. Did the filmmakers see Penelope as a victim of her father? Of Victorian sexism? Or did they view her as "evil" when she danced? Flirted? Killed her attackers? I don't know, but this was unexpected.

Starts off well enough but goes completely off the rails by the third act. Do yourselves a favor and watch "Horror Express" (starring Cushing & Lee in a similar story) instead.

There are two storylines going on here, first the science experiment about the origins of evil, which was really interesting, and then there is the storyline about Cushing's scientist character and his daughter, which wasn't that interesting.

A little more inventive with its plot than most, but then again the best it can think to do with being "evil" is to go out drinking and dancing. Overall this is a good mix of mad science, superstition, insanity and human weakness.

Yes, it's period, and it's Cushing and Lee, but we've seen these men appear in much better horror films than this one
