Absolutely atrocious. Internal story/world logic goes out the window within scenes – nevermind across the entire movie – which coupled with a plot filled with holes and cardboard-cutout characters left me increasingly struggling to keep my eyes open. Steals ideas from A.I., District 9, Elysium and many others, but without any overarching principle. But sure – it looks OK.

The rating I did give it is because it looks cool. And because it's surprisingly very anti-US Army. But the script isn't functional on the most basic of levels, it's loaded with story cliches, it has a country called New Asia and all of its twists were extremely predictable. The world has interesting elements, but it's not coherent or cohesive. Some of the soundtrack was nice! Nothing worked for me on a character / emotional level.

Feels like I should "reward" this more for being a pretty decent sci-fi flick in a world of shit. But come on, there isn't a single original thought in this. I bet my life savings this was pitched as "every scifi movie meets every nam movie with a side of every miracle child and road movie" and thus pants were jizzed.

It's tremendous to looking at, the CGI team all deserve a long round of applause. Sadly, I don't think the script and editing are up to the same level. We'd be talking about a classic otherwise. Lots of potential ideas, none really worked through. Certainly a big (BIG!) screen watch, I was left wanting something more.

A visually stunning movie, really (even though it abuses the usage of explosions). The sentimental moments it tries to pull off feel cheap and mostly unearned, and, for such a philosophical concept, it mostly stays as a superficial carcass of a plot. It also bored me quite a bit at points. Regardless of all the negatives, which make it way more mediocre than it should've been, I still enjoyed it for what it is. It's fine to me.

With a wide range of influences, there's a lot to like in this, but let's be absolutely honest with each other: this is "Avatar" with AI. Take Avatar, mix it with Star Wars, and sprinkle on some Fallout for seasoning, and you get this movie. That's not a bad thing. But I was really hoping for some more nuanced and complex storytelling. This is a very rudimentary narrative, and while that's widely appealing, it challenges nothing and does not expand the conversation around its fertile subject.

The main character has the ability to control all electronic devices- including sentient robots, and claims to want to free them, but that is actually the power to enslave them? Nothing really makes sense, for instance sky missiles from extremely vulnerable antigravity floating not-death-star can be done better with regular missiles of today. The characters aren't interesting, and the road trip parts are boring. Elysium and Chappie are much better.

I for one welcome our robot overlords. Just as with the simulants in the film, "The Creator" looks great but has nothing going on between the ears. Ironic that we are supposed to root for the A.I., when everyone involved in making this film spent the entire summer picketing for protection against A.I. It rushes from firefight to firefight, evoking no emotional attachment to the plot or interest in the characters. I couldn't wait to get out of the theatre.

What made this stand out though was its allegorical interpretation of foreign politics and military invasions (particularly what happened in Nam) that lended the film its somewhat original appeal. Props for shooting this entirely on the FX3 (at least according to IMDb and BTS footage), which is definitely an encouraging sign for aspiring filmmakers out there.

And I'm gonna be nitpicking here, but don't give a flapping noise to an aircraft that doesn't have an external rotor. Either it's an helicopter and it sounds like an helicopter or it's not.

The Creator is a good movie, but sometimes the story is hard to follow, because it is told in a somewhat confusing way. That's why I regret not to be able to give it a higher rating. The musical score by Hans Zimmer is amazing and is worth mentioning on its own.

This film made me think of a couple of film franchies relatively early on - Star Wars in terms of the CGI and sci-fi aspects and (again sci-fi related) the Aliens franchise, in terms of the violence and threat, plus general action based scenes. The plot concept is hardly original (seeking out a young child who may be able to solve things for many) anything but, though it didn't detract from the film. I found this quite an engrossing watch for the visual effects so yes, I'd recommend it.

Looked great, had amazing scenery and included world building that was not complete but comprehensive. Voyles might very well be one of the best child actors I’ve ever seen. Last quarter definitely had a TikTok-esque editing pace but it didn’t bother me. Everything relevant was messaged across effectively.

In a very distant future, Americans have developed some primitive form of self-awareness. Yep, it's science fiction. But it's hilarious to think that this trite crocodile-tears movie replaying the "war on terror" was released just 20 days before the start of the latest massacre in Gaza, so what should have been a safe "feel a bit sorry for your remote misdeeds" movie is now a dangerous critique of the ongoing genocide. I bet the producers are deeply regretting it.

Interesting AI movie, and Alphie saves this not turning out as a total failure of a movie. Still, there is a lack of emotional involvement from all the characters. So much potential, but too predicable and script is at times a crisis. You have to look past many illogical parts of the plot. Super nice CGI though. Many meaningless action scenes. Surprisingly anti-US Army depicting them shooting civilian men, women and children at random throughout the whole movie. At least some war critics there.

Mixing BLADE RUNNER with a Vietnam war allegory, and a hefty dose of dystopic sci-fi movies from the last 20 years; it must be said that Edwards knows how to film brutal action with a grace and beauty, but the characters and plotting make little sense, with the screenplay providing little information about how this world works and operates, which keeps the viewer cold and distant from the central narrative. Nice to see Janney pop up, though she’s never convincing as hard boiled military leader.

Outside of great visuals, not much too it. I think the main problem is the editing, which is noticeably inelegant. Humorous beats land awkwardly and poetic montages feel hurried and unnatural. The general pace is so swift and brute-forced that you have nothing to latch onto. While the editing is the main culprit, there is not much to the story. It is as close to derivative an "original" idea can get, full rollercoaster writing. The child actress is good and again, all the visual stuff is great.

There is a lot to love in the worldbuilding of this, l I really loved how contrary to the norm in the conflict wasn't just between human vs. AI robots but one fraction of humans vs. another fraction of humans aligned with AI. It's a pretty interesting concept with who is considered 'good' and 'bad'. What I really loved most about this movie is how it has set up its world and how everything looks. High-tech gadgets are still accompanied by old-timey phones and record players. The CGI looks good and I'm always a sucket for all kinds of cyberpunk city moods. Plot-wise the long running time makes the movie feel a little bit diluted.

I wanted to fall into this movie, to be immersed and serenaded with intelligence and beauty. Instead, it bumps along with unbelievable plot holes that could easily have been avoided, and unfortunately gets bogged in sentimental swampiness. Such sloppy writing shouldn't have been allowed given how much was put into other aspects of the film. It was a visual treat, with some gorgeous sweeping scenes, and made a decent attempt at depth, but ultimately disappoints.

Despite this, the way the ideas are slotted together makes it feel a little fresher than it probably should, and more than anything you feel like there's at least an effort here to make something legitimately good. Some cool visual stuff and it's a pretty entertaining 2 hours, but don't expect a ton.

Wow, what an EPIC! Happy that they chose so many less known actors for this piece of art. Too bad it's very much underrated. To me it felt like a better version of District 9 and I'm happy it shows AI in a way more positive way than it's being presented in the news now a days. In the end nothing really stands out though and I get the feeling that it could have been so much more.

While the story dives into familiar beats what cannot be denied is the amount of heart this film has. John David Washington is phenomenal as this film progresses and he begins to deliberate on the possibility of his choices. Weighing that against the consequences and the relationship he forms with Alphie, this film really nails the heavy hitting concepts of afterlife. Visually stunning on top of a touching story, The Creator is a phenomenal look at futuristic warfare and the horrors of it all.

A visual feast and a well realized world. I was hooked for the first third, then my interest fell off. There were some cool sci-fi ideas, but I wasn't as emotionally invested as the movie's tone wanted me to be. JD Washington underwhelms again. I liked it overall, and I'm sure plenty of other sci-fi fans out there will like it too.

Gareth Edwards continues to demonstrate his unique visual eye and the best part of The Creator is its inventive and often hauntingly beautiful visions of the future. When it comes to the plot, I find the whole sentient AI mythology to be convoluted and not well executed, but when the film hits its stride with an emotional conclusion, it wins back some points, mostly due to the strong performances from its cast. Solid beginning, great ending, and murky and kind of boring middle.

I'm alarmed by the number of good review it's getting just because it "looks good and futuristic". That's not what makes good sci-fi. Every topic addressed (A.I., humanity, creation, you name it) is done in the dumbest way possible. "Robots" communicate, eat, sleep, behave and think exactly like humans do, to the point that I can't see what makes them robot. NOMAD makes no sense. Worldbuilding is nonexistent. I can't even call it entertainment because it takes itself so seriously. Aggravating.

This type of movie is right up my alley. Anything with anthropomorphic robots and I'm in and will overscore it vs the avg viewer. This featured a ton of plot choices that didn't really make sense, but Alphie is phenomenal so who cares? Some good humour here and there and the emotion comes in droves. It can be considered cheap at points but I enjoyed it quite a bit so it all gets a pass. Beautiful to look at and thrilling to watch. Easy 7.9 for me.

I understand that the plot is nothing we haven't seen a million times before, but it mines this familiar territory with a touching story about father and son, ultimately. And it looks outstanding while doing it; beautiful cinematography and action. Great performance by Washington and a 7-year-old. If you don't tear up when Voyles delivers "Am I going to heaven?" I don't know what to tell you. This is heavy, mature, violent science fiction that doesn't shy away from the horrors of war.

A live-action movie seemingly adapted from a famous anime or manga, the Creator is actually an original world and story. This is a refreshing change from the normal slate of Hollywood blockbusters and the acting talent in this movie, along with the top level CGI and visuals, help make the Creator a true big screen experience. The Creator is a technical and visual display of Gareth Edwards and his potential. It’s just as visceral as it is bleak. It also hangs and throws a lot of concepts that have enough real world relatability, which in itself is interesting for a movie that is strictly a Sc-Fi adventure. Unfortunately, these concepts don’t enrich the story, because the story itself lacks emotional weight. In turn, a lot of these ideas don’t feel coherent, and instead, feels like a storyboard.

Why the fuck were there corded phones in a world with ai robots?? Why was a robot being able to remotely access a tv groundbreaking? Why were there poor robots? Why were robots sleeping? Why did people know the child was a girl? I could go on. When a movie makes me talk about it this much it's usually a good thing. It was pretty at least. Hack everything!

Edwards & Weitz channel Asimov in their creation of The Creator, while taking a few visual cues from Blomkamp's Chappie. As Abrams is to lens flare, Edwards is to smoke grenades, though he shows restraint in not obfuscating most of the action. The world-building is where the film excels; from the maligned AI to the pan-Asiatic amalgam culture. The plot is a bit predicable. The perspective of the US military complex a tad exaggerated but not all together unfair. A little unfocused but enjoyable.

It's not bad, but it fell a bit short for me. The visuals are nice and the concept draws you in, but it feels like the movie loses focus and meanders for a long time. It also can't quite decide if it wants to be primarily focused on the philosophy and concepts, or action, so it ends up a weird, drawn-out blend that I don't think will satisfy either viewer. I personally think less action and more focus on the characters and ideas would've been better for the focus of the film.

The broad themes ... not really a plea to recognize the humanity in others (that's really taken for granted here) but more of an examination of the moral and psychological costs on us when we refuse to do that ... are timely, and the deliberate invoking of war, especially wars like Vietnam, is interesting. Parallels are drawn between all the ways we are tempted to dehumanize the other.

This isn’t too special from the story standpoint, but it is great from the technical aspect. And the soldier and the kid have pretty good chemistry too. It probably won’t win any awards for writing, but it will surely be a strong contender for the technical aspects. It’s a movie that looks great while telling a story that’s… passable.

Imagine if Neil Blomkamp had lived up to expectations. Or James Cameron didn't waste his last couple of decades on Avatar. The story isn't ground breaking,but it's easily one of the most visually spectacular movies I've seen this year

Saw at the IMAX: this sci-fi film with lo-fi aesthetics needs to be seen on the biggest screen available. John David Washington continues to be a charismatic action lead. Hans Zimmer actually scored a new vibrant soundtrack. Gareth Edwards delivers big visuals with cinematographers Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer.

Further confirmation that Gareth Edwards is one of our finest at delivering memorable and arresting sci-fi imagery. This is easily one of the best-looking blockbusters of the year, and the world of the film is immersive and distinct. While the familiar story beats might have bored me in lesser hands, Edwards supplements that by crafting engaging environments and cool technology that stands apart from the countless distant-future universes in recent cinematic history.

Saw at the IMAX: watch it on the big screen. Surprised I gave it this high a score through Flickchart, it'll likely come down some. Great visuals, stylish, some jumps in the plot and clearly derivative of Bladerunner and Terminator, but generates a similarly good atmosphere. Heavyhanded references to Vietnam and Buddhism, and American-military-baddies is a worn trope. I like Washington like everyone else. Kid was good

Nice visuals and good mood. I also liked the robot outlook and animation. Unfortunately the story was pure pain.Lots of holes in the story and in many places unrealistic story twists. I could not be comparing it with District 9 (2009).
