Holds up remarkably well, for what it is. Though you'd think that today, the moral wouldn't be "...And that's why only able-bodied rich white people should play with power."

I see why this movie inspired so many young witches, but I also see why not many adults go back to it. The front half is full of empowerment and friendship, the characters forming close-knit bonds, supporting each other emotionally, and learning more about their power. It makes an impression. Then the back half throws it all away. The screenplay decides that girls can't be trusted with power, so characterization goes out the window and it turns into a mediocre psychological thriller. Bah.

What undoubtedly works is the depiction of friendship, effortlessly bringing to life the strong bond these four women develop with each other through their experiences with magic. What doesn't work so well is the inevitable conflict, even if Balk gives it her all, since we get no satisfactory resolution. It also commits the cardinal sin of being way too vanilla when it comes to magic. That's all kind of a let down, especially after such strong build-up.

Instead of becoming another good horror film which uses its conventions to explore the pressures and relationships between young women, it quickly shoots itself in the foot. The fact that [Slight Spoiler] it leads to the most normal, middle class and boring character (Tunney) being the heroine, while the least conventional looking, white trash character (Balk) is the obviously evil and psychopathic one, makes me want to travel back to the 90s and smack the filmmaker's head into a wall.

Very 90s film that captures the era well and I really like the way the horror, while always at the forefront, is mostly used as flavour for what is essentially a high school coming of age movie, and a pretty decent one at that. The characterizations are good and all four leads do really well, though Tunney and Balk are given much more to do and stand out because of it.

"The Craft" is a fun movie about four teenage girls who pursue witchcraft for different reasons. The main character is seen as the "natural witch" as she has always had her powers and didn't have to invoke spells read in books. Even though each character has a clear understandable motivation for pusruing witchcraft, the movie is rather standard in its dichotomy of good and bad. Regardless it's a fun, harmless movie that at least tried. Fairuza Balk is really giving 110%, too.

There's a certain cheesy 90s nostalgia to it, but ultimately the movie treads an overly familiar story arc, with very little you won't see coming. If I had actually seen this back in the 90s I think I might have developed a weird gothy crush on Fairuza Balk.

A mostly serious-minded horror fable revolving around the theme of empathy, this shares similarities with _Carrie_, _Heathers_ (though it's heavier than that), and the latter's 1976 model, _Massacre at Central High_. Filardi's organic script, Fleming's urgent direction, a top rock soundtrack, a compelling cast, and the expected FX expertise combine to put this over the top.

There's absolutely no reason for this film to have an R-rating. A fun watch at Halloween. I think it suffers from B-plots being cut for some of the supporting witch characters, but it's still a fun, campy time.

Unusual & memorable for how matter-of-factly it does what it does. The 1st half is essentially a superhero origin film, but one tailored specifically to the sensibilities of females. At the same time there's no reason guys (esp comic book fans) shouldn't like it, esp when it turns into more traditional horror in its 2nd half. The performances are riveting as well esp Tunney as the troubled heroine & the maniacal, wide-mouthed Balk, who alone must've inspired many an introverted girl to go goth

It hangs on extremely awkward characterization where certain questions of the morality of its lead characters are never resolved or taken anywhere aside from a flat conclusion of "wow, they're actually horrible people!" Ignoring the specific dilemmas each girl faced to justify its admittedly fun climax. The movie gives us a glimpse of a lot of narrative beats but doesn't want to do anything with them and just comes off as a shallow revenge flick which is afraid to actually do anything daring.

A huge nothing, example of cynical 90s Hollywood cash grab. Teen high school drama (a very very lame boring one) with a goth witch skin. No effort was put into this. Zero artistic merit, but easy to market to a specific 'look'. The producers simply had this timely idea, throw a gothy looking Fairuza Bulk in, add Neve Campbell, and that was as far as any thought went. It completely worked though, they knew there was a waiting audience for this film, and lots of money was made.

Didn't really know what to expect from this movie, not knowing much about it, but I found myself enjoying It. I thought all of the cast did a pretty decent job, with the exception of the 2 leads who really carried the movie for me. They both played their characters really well and kept the messy story going. Tunney played the lead likable protagonist with more heart than I was expecting, and Balk played crazy and homicidal to perfection. The story isn't amazing, but I give 7 spells out of 10.

The Craft is an enjoyable if somewhat dated film that blends brooding valley teenagers with campy-wicca-magic (think Clueless meets Charmed). The feminist undertones are related to self-discovery & self-empowerment, with bullying as the main theme; a refreshing change from "oppression by the patriarchy". The 3rd act pivots to the consequences of power, which works thematically but is lacking in execution. I liked the 90's alt soundtrack. The performances & effects leave something to be desired.

It's okay. A bit cheesy at parts but at least it didn't linger too long on these parts. One issue however is that so many tv shows and movies copied the concepts ever since that it is not as fresh now than it must have been then.

Uneven but watchable teen horror juggles a broadly 'feminist' coming of age story with 90's youth moral panic (i.e.teen suicide, promiscuity, Wicca/black magic etc). The responsibility angle would probably be jettisoned today, and Fleming relies on style in the effects driven finale to compensate for the obvious breakdowns in concept and narrative. On the plus side, the 'diversity' focus isn't forced, and all four leads deliver the goods to varying degrees, especially Balk and Tunney.

So much potential ultimately gone to waste. Despite a good premise & plenty of fun to be had, this is a deeply flawed & very misguided teen fantasy/horror that never became what it was clearly trying to be. Marred by characters who disappear from the plot at random, developments that make no sense or go nowhere, a frustratingly nonsensical third act, & an impressively bland lead heroine, it's only watchable for its 90's charm & its likeable cast- which is really a shame.

I loved parts of this - the way the supernatural aspects of the film are just completely accepted, the quick pacing, and much of the first and second acts show the characters having fun with their powers - yet the third act becomes a contrived effort to throw in an antagonist, and by this point I quickly lose interest. The need to display the idea of witchcraft as evil feels unnecessary, and throws the whole movie off-balance.
