Very old-school action movie script, so, heroics-filled nonsense with an absolutely ridiculous body-count of extras. It didn't help that I dislike Jake Gyllenhaal either. Guy Ritchie is a skilled director which makes this sort of watchable, but in the end the stupidity is pretty mind-boggling.

A good war movie about determination and honor. I was hoping this was a true story, but I'm sure that all of the pieces of this likely played out in Afghanistan during the war. The battles were quite brutal. Excellent quality production. Good pacing. Dar Salim and Jake Gyllenhaal were great. Engaging story that you get invested in. Highly worth watching, but not for the little ones.

It seemed like a straightforward "modern" war movie, then it turns into the Odyssey, and then into a rescue mission. It's never monotonous, and both leads are compelling to watch.

My favourite film of 2023 to date. Outstanding performances from Salim and Gyllenhaal. Ritchie doesn't miss often. The pacing does slow slightly at some points, and that lowered the score for some, but I was fully immersed throughout. Spectacular. 9.0

Dramatic, suspenseful, can't get enough of it type of a movie. Dar Salim is superb here and Jake Gyllenhaal is his usual perfect self.

While a bit over-the-top and action-hero at times, I think it served its purpose in terms of raising awareness of just how shit we were in Afghanistan to the people who were loyal to us. I cried a few manly tears at the end.

I felt drawn into the story and satisfied with the tension release at the end. But then comes the after-taste. I know not every thing has to be about politics, but if you gonna choose a tricky topic like US involvement in Afghanistan, you have to know you are walking into a minefield. And displaying such a slaughter of Talibans without trying to represent even a glimpse of their side of the story ... maybe they are just there to get smashed into pieces ?

An extremely high Taliban body count. Like fish in a barrel! +5! Satisfying testosteron bonding and streamlined escape and combat scenes here, by that i mean the combat is very easy to follow which can’t be said for a lot of other war movies. I liked this better than any other Guy Ritchie. I think it’s bc he puts a lid on his comedic aspirations and then he turns out to be a skillful director that knows how to make a Taliban soldier or two perish with grace. Too bad the music is so generic

Spoiler alert! I enjoyed the parts where he struggled on phone to arrange for their visa. In reality the procedure to secure a visa would be as disturbing as the war. I also doubt that interpreters got passports that easily. They probably just got special visas if they were lucky.

Gyllenhaal is a tremendous lead actor and he shows why with ease in this film. Dar Salim steals the show as Ahmed. Hired by the US Army as interpreter he steps up when his Sargeant is injured. It is a very tense film, a very powerful film and a striking film. The visuals don't hold back from showing the true nature of a violent war. A solid movie with incredible pacing from beginning to end to hold your interest.

Overall, a very effective war and character piece. Guy Ritchie really reigns in a lot of his frenetic style of filmmaking to tell a story of bravery and honor. I did find the film a bit uneven at times, but that's a small nitpick. The scenes with Gyllenhaal and Ahmed trying to survive while hiding from the Taliban are the film's best and effective and tense, but the scenes with the other military personnel do feel a bit by the numbers at times. All in all, it's effective at telling its story

It is slick, well shot and edited. But to put over an hour to the escape scenes to have the ending finish in just 15 mins just felt extremely unbalanced. I give it to Ritchie being very inexperienced in this type of film. Apart from that is was a decent watch.

The America parts sort of take one out of the pace, in spite of how necessary it was to the story, but otherwise it was an engaging "small battle among a large war" focus/perspective that made it more punchy

I acknowledge my opinion is a pretty unpopular one here. There’s certainly a lot to like, from the performances, to the cinematography, and the bond between the two lead characters. I liked Ahmed, but the rest of the characters fell flat for me. I liked the score, but it felt like it belonged to a different movie at times. There were only a couple scenes that really made this stand out. It’s not that it’s bad, but it reminded me of Lone Survivor, just with less impact.

More than anything The Covenant (2023) feels economically smart. It knows it's limits and with that focuses it's story while delivering key moments well. Guy Ritchie keeps one main character constantly in frame, Jake Gyllenhaal, who is likable in just about everything he's in, and that way keeps the scale of the Afghan war to a easy to digest mess. Feels like a movie that overachieved, for I ended up enjoying this a lot more than I had expected going in.

"The Covenant" is an action-packed war film that, while flawed, still manages to leave an impression. Its portrayal of the perilous journey of an interpreter in a war zone brings attention to a crucial and often overlooked aspect of war. One can only hope that its relative successes will inspire further, deeper examinations of such important topics.

What stops this from an 80 is just the fact that the pace slowed to a crawl at a certain point, which would have been fine, if Ritchie didn't make us re-watch it as a montage of Gyllenhaal's memories later on. But besides that, this has great music, good performances, solid action and a good sense of tension. Ritchie did find a way to inject some of his flair in there without smothering the gritty tone.

"Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" explores military conflicts in the Middle East with a grounded tone and realistic action. Despite showcasing Ritchie's stylish presentation and a captivating score, the film suffers from a tedious pace, banal atmosphere, and underdeveloped characters. The narrative lacks depth, and the cast is hindered by weak material, resulting in a disappointing overall experience.
