The plot goes off the rails after the train. God damn Spartacus moment out of nowhere. Liam Neeson gets maced and shrugs it off like it was nothing. Liam Neeson's head in the span of three minutes goes through five panels of glass and he isn't even phased. I'm starting to understand why Liam Neeson is picking these roles.

It's rapidly getting to the point that a movie with Liam Neeson is not worth watching. I never thought I would say that. This movie sounded bad from the description and unfortunately it did not disappoint at being bad. It has a few tense moments, but the plot is so ludicrously bad that it basically has no chance out the gate. The dialog is not much better. Production quality, sound and music are good, and there is a mildly interesting train crash. Worth watching? Maybe... maybe not.

It does what it does well enough for a while and then it deteriorates and why did you watch it? What did it gain you? They missed an opportunity to set this a few decades back and make the wanted party a communist and then they could rename it The Commieuter, wait, The Commutrad, no, The Communi...you know what? Come back to me on this one.

Disposable Neeson-kicks-ass actioner is fun for a while, especially in the unoriginal but involving enough set-up; gets most of its mileage from Neeson's good-trooper performance (the "new" Harrison Ford?), though the too-obvious "yakety sax" undercranking in some key action scenes show that his days as a viable action star may be receding. Ticks the boxes and gets the job done (with a great Banks cameo), though the elaborate nature of the conspiracy scenario beggars belief at times.

Not as clever as it thinks it is or as thrilling as it wants to be, The Commuter (aka Taken Lite) simply comes and goes like a common locomotive. While there will always be an audience for such popcorn fare, this seems like an opportunity missed as a visibly weary Liam Neeson spends much of his ill-fated commute trying to avoid conflict rather than welcome it with clenched fists. Looking every bit his 65 years, it might be time for the once spritely Neeson to hand in his reluctant-hero badge.

So this is Neeson's bread and butter as far as action movies. This lacks creativity, and doesn't even really deviate from a film both Neeson and Collet-Sierra did in Non-Stop just a few years ago. Aside from a different setting, and a twist or two, this is that. It's predictable, but it does just enough to keep you entertained, and a lot of that has to do with Neeson's presence raising these otherwise straight-to-DVD projects. Makes you wonder how much longer Neeson keeps doing these.

The bulk of this is a generic (*cough*Non-Stop*cough*), lazily-written (how do these villains know everything, and what's their motivation?) thriller (more on-screen Farmiga would've helped-she was an enigmatic delight in her early scene), but the production value is notably above average (the opening credits sequence was a brilliant bit of editing showing the "same but different" angle of the daily commute; the cinematography is also quite slick throughout-see the swirling guitar fight).

The conceit itself is hard enough to believe, but it is the baffling final act that contributes the greatest weight of contrivance to the film, and while there are occasional moments of some quality in the script and plot, they are surrounded on every side by holes the size of Europe, and it would take cables as thick as the English Channel to suspend one's disbelief throughout them.

Liam Neeson starts off the train ride by purposefully playing into the hands of bad people. He continues to do this through 80% of the movie while claiming he's trying to stop them. The believability dies when he survives something he clearly shouldn't, followed by the entire train doing the same (don't want to spoil, but it's ridiculous). He then entirely forgets to rule out the punk girl as a suspect. Movie ends hoping we don't notice the SWAT can see the cop fighting innocent passengers.

A claustrophobic thriller that never rises above the level of dependability, THE COMMUTER delivers the kind of vaguely mysterious suspense plot that we've come to expect from this director-star pairing. It's as surprising as the average TV crime procedural, but you can still appreciate the magnitude of Liam Neeson's pissed-off everyman charisma. It shows little interest in connecting the dots of its suggested conspiracy, but it's hard not to respect a movie that literally jumps off the rails.

True story: Liam Neeson came to his agent with a script that he "fell in love with". It turned out just to be the word EXPENSIVE written on a piece of hotel stationary, but some calls were made and the rest is cinema history. So don't give up on your dreams.

About the only thing I remember from the preceding three Neeson-Saume-Collet films is Vincent D'Onofrio's big hat (actually, was it that big a hat?) but it is now my moral duty never to forget the CG travesty of a train crash that caps this shit. Ironic: it has all the force and weight of a cursor crossing the screen.

High concept trash where nothing makes much sense, the attempts to build suspense are lame, the plot twists are obvious, the action scenes are ridiculous, and the characters are barely one dimensional. The key to figuring out the identity of the mystery character is to notice who's given the least amount of screen time, and figuring out who the traitor is a simple matter of noticing who's presented as trustworthy and who seems shifty then reverse them. Epic fail.

Not that bad at all. Has a little bit of mystery along with decent enough action. Cast is okay, dialogue is okay, general flow of story is fine. My biggest issue is probably the fight scenes, which look like they were recorded in half speed and made 3x faster. The end could have been a lot better too.

Riddled w/ implausibilities both in plot & in many of the action sequences (the kind of battering Neeson's skull sustains with scarcely a bruise is only matched later in the film by the crash he survives equally limber & ready for action), but it's all so over the top I couldn't help but laugh. Despite all the (unintentionally funny) ludicrousness there's also Neeson's always magnetic performance, & an unpredictable how-will-all-the-dots-(sort of?) connect curiosity built into the narrative.

The Commuter hopes the audience will suspend rational thinking and forget logic and immerse themselves in Neeson attempting to be a badass. The plot has more holes than swiss cheese and Neesons acting was cheesier than my plate of nachos last night for supper. One of his most meh performances in recent history the film does very little because the plot is razor thin. Vera Farmiga is vastly under used begging the question of why she was even cast at all. Just a completely average movie.

This is one where casting choices kind of give away part of the intrigue (you'll know what I mean if you watch it). Because of this, the film has an interesting scenario but peters out into a fairly typical Liam Neeson film. Which is fine if that's what you're looking for but look elsewhere if you want more.

This is basically a genre of movie now, and the most infuriating aspect of every one is the "one-take" action sequence that is always poorly choreographed and pieced together by awkward CGI to bridge the takes because the budget is too low and its director is too lazy. It's fun, not awful, but I definitely won't care about this movie 3 months from now.

This is a fairly decent thriller - its a bit unbelievable but its got enough plot twists and some solid special effects for it to be a fairly good watch. Liam Neeson plays his usual stereotypical must-save-the-day type character. If you don't like far fetched stories then this may not be for you but otherwise its reasonably good and probably worth a watch.

Unconvincing things to happen in a train. There are so many cliches and wrong plots twists. Michael (Liam) looks like a dumb-dumb when he supposed to be a brilliant person according to the script. Also; beginning of the movie was so perfect that it could be a new Memento with a diffirent script and casting. In short; this movie sucks.

The movie started out good if cliched but it became more over the top and cartoonish as it went on. The action scenes were laughablely bad, with poor editing and worse CGI. The ending was super cheesy and has the worst kind of happy Hollywood ends. It's passed the time but I can't pretend it was actually good.

Honestly probably the weakest of the four Jaume Collet-Serra/Liam Neeson team-ups - and none of the other three are particularly standout cinematic works either - lacking the compelling high-concept hooks of Unknown and Non-Stop or the grit of Run All Night. Very just Generic Thriller 101, Neeson's casting being the only thing lifting it above straight-to-DVD tier.

Liam Neeson doing what he does. I don't think anybody will say that this is an awesome movie but I'm going to go ahead and give this a 70 based solely on the fact that I was quite entertained the entire time while understanding it's not a substantial movie I wanna see again. There is a nice little mystery that keeps everything going, some tension, decent writing. If I ever got to a point where I didn't enjoy movies like this I wouldn't wanna watch movies anymore.

Neeson, 65, insisted as recently as Sept. 2017 that he's done with action films. And yet, here he is again, still proving that he's capable of doing whatever is necessary to stop the bad guys in this fast-paced thriller may at times make you grimace at its violence or frown at its foul language.

It gets a little ridiculous in its final few scenes, but The Commuter is a fun action-thriller that works for the majority of its running time and has a solid mystery at its core. It's got some twists, some fun obstacles, and a very game Liam Neeson on its side, and it turns out you don't really need a whole lot more than that.
