The cool, suspense and action of Pitch Black have been replaced by...what the hell was this mess? Carries the same suspense and political drama the the Star Wars prequels have and we know how well that worked.

I actually liked this more than Pitch Black, which doesn't seem like a popular opinion around here (or anywhere). It doesn't all work, & the decision to take Riddick from from a hardened criminal/the Most Dangerous Man in the Universe to a predestined Chosen One is not a good one at all. But the movie has a frenetic energy to it that Pitch Black did not, and the hammy performances all around make this quite the good time. It's not a success, but it is entertaining, and that counts for something.

Vin Diesel plays a pretty good one-dimensional anti-hero, fight scenes are good, it's not too cheesy, plot is ok and the special effects are not bad for the time. Overall an enjoyable sci-fi action flick.

Entertaining if you really enjoy the Riddick character. The sequel feels forced, however. Some of the action is pretty neat but it's disappointing to see David Twohy try and make Riddick far more epic that it should have been. None the less, Vin Diesel plays Riddick to perfection and honestly if you like Riddick and don't mind a bit of a bogus plot you may very well enjoy it.

There's so much to dislike here - it's bloated, too dense, boring even though it tries to be epic - and yet I also sort of liked it? I can't say this reaches the levels of a movie I can say I truly like but there are moments it gets close.

All the weirdness that is The Chronicles of Riddick might have held together if Vin Diesel as the title character was even the slightest bit interesting. This is not an uninspired failure due to the sheer volume of interesting (if not half-baked) ideas so it might be worth a watch.

The Chronicles of Riddick is a boring generic action film. It brought nothing to the genre, shame to Pitch Black, and disappointment to me. It was a film that failed to capture the parts the made its predecessor good, while introducing elements that weighed it down. The action scenes were standard issue, the characters had no depth, Riddick was your average action hero, and even the one thing that makes him special, his see-in-the-dark eyes, were largely forgotten about.

The only thing that the original Riddick of "Pitch Black" has in common with the "superhero" Riddick of this shameless play for box office revenue is that Vin Diesel played him in both films.

An impressively entertaining picture featuring a fairly weak (but very well written) plot. Ultimately, however, the only reason to see this picture is to watch Riddick kill many people in amusing ways. Although there is an attempt to steer him into the role of "good guy," that generally does happen. But there is the classic anti-hero mistake here, the "bad guy" is just über bad to make up for the evilness of the 'hero'.

Blurgh. I just didn't care. I get that it's Vin Diesel's passion project and the D&D feels were certainly there, but not having seen Pitch Black, I just didn't get the lore nor did I care about it. It's just a bit too ambitious with the world-building and the story it wants to tell and in doing so, it alienated me from having any interest in what was happening. Some cool scenes, like the panther things at the prison, and the planet design was nice. But otherwise, just a huge hit-and-miss for me.

Ugly, murky, borderline incomprehensible sci-fi outing hopefully plays better and more coherently to its target audience – wastes a decent cast, though it must be said that a very stoic Dench does her best to bring some gravitas to her mercifully brief scenes. Tough going if you are not in to the convoluted, arcanely detailed nature of this brand of more heavy-going sci-fi, but there does come a point where the effort required is not really worth the payoff.

I am a big fan of Sci-Fi. I loved this movie as well as the first movie. It follows an unusual convict named Riddick in a non stop action flick. The action is a bit over the top at times but it was fun. And the plot was very entertaining for anyone with a little imagination.

Not as good as Pitch Black, but watchable. It's a bit forgettable with its generic plot and clichéd characters. On the other hand, I liked the design of the Necromongers and their culture. The Chronicles of Riddick is a poor sequel and a complete waste of potential. It's predecessor 'Pitch Black' was a half decent Sci/Fi that was dark, violent, claustrophobic and it developed a strong cult following. But this sequel lacks everything that made the original enjoyable. Other than the Riddick character, this unrecognisable sequel shares nothing else with 'Pitch Black'. Everything is toned down for kids, it looks and feels completely different & the bigger budget is completely wasted.

The downfall of this movie was its forced attempt to create a continuation to Pitch Black. It was worse than the first movie, even though with the available money they hit some nice chords in the effects department (Particularly with the atmospheres of different planets). Necromonger concept was weak, but I like the "Double Janus" mask design of the "Darth Vader mutant" villain.

I expected to like Pitch Black more than this, but my interest will always be more peaked by epic battles and grand scale action more than a small group fighting for survival. Chronicles is a very different step from its predecessor, but in my opinion it develops a richer, more exciting sci-fi world. The plot itself was fairly ruptured by the Furyan storyline, and the ending was a bit rushed, but all in all this movie exceeded my expectations.

I realized quickly after watching Chronicles of Riddick, which has not aged well, the reason why Riddick is so ridiculous (get it?): he's in the wrong movies -- and I don't know if that's on purpose or not. The convoluted plot and the silly villains up against someone who should be in an episode of Oz or whatever is a goofy premise, and it's hard to suspend disbelief. It did make me want to play the video games, though.

While I am fully fascinated by the substance of the movie, a sci-fi driven by religion and 'space magic' instead of technology, everything else ranges from being dull to in shambles. Plus, it has none of the charm or ingenuity of Pitch Black. And man, Vin Diesel and his dialogue is atrocious in this. It is a disappointing sequel to what could have been an interesting series; it seems David Twohy knows what he wants, just not how to get it. And why is Judi Dench there all of a sudden? No sense.

A complete failure to capitalize on the solid first movie in the series. Basically every character but Riddick and Kyra was intolerable. Vin Deisel's acting (mostly due to bad writing) is disappointing. The later fight scenes are unbelievable (nice 'ghosts'!), and the antagonists' motivations are confused. But it isn't hopeless; enough parts are good that I think one could cut the film in half, replace most of the supporting characters, and have a decent action movie with the Riddick character.

A fun ride, overall, though it suffers from a couple of plot holes, overwrought and overacted dialogue, and in particular, how flat Vin Diesel's performances as Riddick are (though this is a problem with the character as a whole, not just this movie).
The theme and aesthetic of the film really make it feel like it shouldn't have any relation to its prequel, Pitch Black, or to the Riddick character at all.
Even so, though, it's a very enjoyable sci-fi action film, definitely worth a watch.

Pitch Black was no masterpiece but it had its moments. Its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, alternates between incomprehensive and laughably stupid. It's warmed over fantasy and reheated space opera for the mook generation. Vin Diesel's mouth-breathing protagonist stumbles from one big action scene to the next, but there's no purpose to any of it, no art. Its biggest offense is that it's boring. Also, Judi Dench?
