My god, I was not expecting this bleak of a film. Things just slowly start unraveling as the film progresses, and then it starts hitting you with punches before you even know it. Surprised to see a role where Duvall gets cucked hard by his wife.

Something's wrong, apocalyptically wrong – sick, nuts! – in Texas, USA. What is it to do with, ultimately: race, or sex, or guns, or money, or something harder to point a finger at? Some strong scenes, but right when it should be reaching a terrifying crescendo, it somehow seems to wither away into lacklustre predictability. Uncomfortably caught between the last throes of the studio system and a more unshackled and sophisticated form of filmmaking, but Brando certainly leaves an impression.

Flawed but fiery drama, powered by Penn's direction (showing a mastery of mixing low comedy with shattering drama) and a staggering cast of 60s talent; Brando's performance is a masterclass of understatement; Marshall superb as a venal big-wig, and Fonda, Fox, Dickinson and an almost silent Redford stand-out in support. Screenplay may be too ambitious at times, packing in themes of corruption, racism, sexism and other social issues, but Penn successfully manages to keep all the balls in the air.

All-star cast (Brando, Fonda, Redford, etc) are not wasted in this, but it's them that make it more than just a decent tale of small-town corruption and racism.

In an unusually star-studded cast, no one really stands out. Except maybe Janice Rule. The biggest strength of the film is its portrayal of a salient moment in contemporary (American) history.

a "I'm sick of this America" movie. very timely when you think civil right movements in mid sixties. lots of big actors. Brando, Redford, and two goddesses of two different periods in the same movie, Miriam Hopkins and Jane Fonda. Still, the movie lacks pace & maybe a bit heavy-handed in terms of social criticism

"The Chase" had all the pieces in place to be a great movie, but it's last 30 minutes just didn't take me over the top.

Shades of Kazan and Ray abound, The Chase is an effective, if uneven, allegory for the collapse of America via the slow destruction of an increasingly fractured community. Brando is excellent as the sheriff who must locate Reeves to prevent a bloodbath caused by mob rule. It's a fairly bleak look at a seemingly ordinary town concealing a rotten underbelly, and Penn's classical visual style is a pleasure to watch, as are the performances by then up and comers (Fonda, Duvall and Redford).

The title makes it seem like it's going to be about Brando's sheriff hunting for Redford's fugitive, but Redford's escape is just a catalyst for a more complex work about the dynamics of a small Texas town as they splinter during one hot summer night. There's an unhinged quality to the film that keeps it interesting, with sequences like the fiery finale and the drunken party that dissolves into a 'play gunfight' adding a touch of the nightmarish and surreal amidst the more melodramatic emotions

A fine acting and directing. The bigger than a life story was neat, though the first two third made waiting uneasy. You can see already hear which actors will be big names afterwards.

Yet another horribly unpleasant film from the 60's or 70's where a village or a town becomes a picture of society as a whole. Like in the even better Straw Dogs disturbed people with some kind of inferiority complex go for a cocktail of alcohol and here-and-now justice. Nothing good comes out of that, surprisingly. The Chase has some great performances, some beautiful women (well, and men, I suppose) and gives me a feeling that USA during the communist hunt must've been somewhat as eery as this.

The goodness of the few decent characters is utterly thwarted by the apathy, corruption, frustration and hatred of a town (and presumably the whole country is being implicated as well) where morality is spiralling down the toilet. Marlon Brando is excellent, the rest of the cast is kinda blah. I can't get into Jane Fonda at all. The direction is somewhat lackluster as well, but the slow burn and build-up of the movie is so intense that it merits a good rating.

HDTVRip no MakingOff.
