The Chalk Garden

The best thing about this heated melodrama is Kerr's controlled performance as the governess with the shady past. Hayley Mills, moving away from her wholesome Disney typecasting, is rather irritatingly over-the-top, her dad has too little to do and Evans coasts through her role, although she has a couple of fun moments near the end. The symbolism (the difficulties of raising a chid/the difficulties of raising a garden) is heavy-handed and the plot is a bit silly, but it's never boring.
