Paul Lukas was decent as Philo but he most definitely is no William Powell. The acting is pretty broad here but the dialogue was fun.

Many fun moments throughout the film and some nice 5 minutes of thrills at the end, but the recurrent silliness, uninteresting characters and witty servitude made this not enjoyable

Odd choice to play Philo. Hungarian Paul Lukas with a thick European accent. As a detective story it was about average. Enough good characters and happenings to make it interesting. Plus the romantically linking Vance with Rosalind Russell gave it some magnetism. Alison Skipworth the short time she was there was the actress of the moment. Paul Lukas as the detective was mellow but corny trying to be Vance. Sounded truly off when he did the catchphrase of '35 - "Skip it!"
