Low-key, typically restrained British war movie tells an intriguing tale of moral responsibility helped by a winsome lead performance from Redgrave, and a gallery of supporting players who create effective (and affecting) character cameos. Perhaps the 'happily ever after' finale doesn't quite ring true, and the film would be approaching masterpiece territory if the relationship between Redgrave and Kempson was resolved more honestly, but as it is, a fine entry in a staple genre.

Very British stiff upper lip, with very little to no portrayal of the harsh realities of war. However a strong cast and their different storylines make this a compelling and emotionally moving piece.

A steadily paced and enjoyable two thirds of a film. The first hour I enjoyed immensely in fact, could have been rated 90. Just a bit unfortunate that it all started to fall apart nearer the end. I Started to notice way too many forced plot devices to force either happy feelings or tension, just to have the latter feelings resolved in the most unrealistic and comical way possible. Except for the hugging of a never before seen daughter, none of the emotional gestures at the end seemed natural.

A Czech war prisoner takes the uniform of a dead English soldier trying to escape. Doesn't quite go over with the other British prisoners, but the plot becomes about how to fool the Nazis. Tickles the curiosity for a war story, and it's got a likable cast to back it up.

A genuinely honest film with strong character driven performances. Has a feel on an ensemble cast (which it was) and there are some early cameos (Gordon Jackson for one). A simple story by todays standards but full of unspoken subtext and a genuine quality which makes this well worth watching.
