The Cantor's Son

1937
Drama, Musical
This musical drama marks the screen debut of Moishe Oysher, in a film critic J. Hoberman calls an "anti-Jazz Singer." Oysher stars as a wayward youth who makes his way from his Polish shtetl to New York's Lower East Side where he is "discovered" and becomes a well-known singer. Ultimately, he returns home to the Old Country and reunites with his parents and his childhood sweetheart. (imdb)

The Cantor's Son (1937) is a Jewish musical, which reminds a little about The Jazz Singer (1927), but with a more uplifting story, unless you are the Euro-Jew's American wife. The ambiance feels very rooted in it's Yiddish culture with powerful songs booming over the picture. Becomes a heavy version of those light musicals Hollywood was making in the same time period. Doesn't really work for me apart from a few tones hitting the mark.
