The tone in Griffith's treatment of Indian subjects could be curiously all over the map. The foundational image of the "Wild" Indian in this one is thoroughly stupid and insulting, and it throws in Cumpson's pantomime Chinese act while at it. It doesn't even work particularly well as melodrama, as Inslee's attempts at poignant emoting get lost under all the ugly caricature and sloppy commotion.
