I don't know how to rate such a film, so I'm going to just sit right in the middle. Taken from the imagery alone, my image of hell is a dark room where fires happen adjacent to dirty people, and if you're the unlucky guy you get a few worms on you. Satan's stained-glass window face makeup was actually really cool, though. The film didn't stay consistently amusing, because we spend more time staring at Pastor Estus Pirkle than at hell, but enough of it was. File me under not fully convinced.

"Perhaps you're saying: Preacher, I couldn't come to Jesus after a message like that. People would say I'd been scared into getting saved.... What would that matter?" Brilliant. Has more fire and brimstone than a Puritan Sunday BBQ, and just as grave. Asks fundamental spiritual questions about the eternal descent of sinners in "both soul and body" into the depths of Gehenna, with an immediate literalness unscathed by those pesky intellectuals and Hermeneutics. A red-hot time capsule.
