Producer Edward Small thought he'd found his next big star when he cast Anthony Dexter in Valentino (1951), and followed-up with a costume adventure putting him in the lead with Anthony Quinn as his screen rival. Lavish production in Technicolor and good cinematography and decent cast. The problem was that Dexter looked kind of goofy trying to be the handsome adventurer. The film tries, Dexter tires, but it never becomes more than a standard and often forgettable swashbuckler.
